Mom, I Got My Attitude From You (And That’s Not A Bad Thing!)

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Dear Mom,

The big question appalled and surprised parents often ask their child after a confrontational or revelatory moment is, “Where did you get this attitude from?”

I know you hate to admit it, mother of mine, but I get much of my determined and strong-willed nature from you. I and many other millennials just like me are at a point in our lives when the world is spinning just a smidgen too fast, the bonds we’ve made throughout childhood are all too often broken, and the only things we have that are constant and prevalent are the lessons and the behaviors our parents have taught us.

Mom, I know it’s hard dealing with the teenage angst, the constant sighing, and the ever-changing moods that come with raising a child. But you should also marvel at the fact that I’ve made it this far, that I’m healthy and happy, and that I continue to become more of who I am because of the guidance and persistence that are you.

Be glad you have a grounded child with a common-sense-filled head on her shoulders, who won’t take no for an answer.

Be glad you have a loud, talk-your-ear off little human to call your own.

Be glad because these children with “attitude” are the very ones who shape and save the world.

When I was small, I would attend barbecues and family events and wander away from my parents. It wouldn’t be long before someone would stop me to ask whether I was my mother’s daughter.

“Your mom is Melissa,” they’d say, a warm smile on their faces. “Is that right?” I would nod, which would prompt a short series of awkward questions and comments, perhaps followed by a quick, dry remark, and then that famous line: “Yes, you are your mother’s daughter.” Just as, I assume, parents feel when their child talks back or defies them, I was appalled at this statement. To me, I acted nothing like you, Mom.

No one says, “I know you’re Melissa’s daughter because of your eyes and nose” (although I’m sure these things help in the identification process); it’s the character traits that seal the deal. Like you, I am reserved yet confident—I may be quiet, but I don’t allow others to overstep the boundaries and rules that I’ve set for myself. I am kind, but I am not to be taken advantage of. Dry wit, intuitiveness, intelligence, and yes, maybe a little bit of attitude—these are the things I am grateful I have received from you.

There’s nothing wrong with having attitude. After all, where would we be if we didn’t have the drive to stand up for ourselves and protect our thoughts, minds, and bodies?

Like for most black individuals, attitude is what defines you and me, and it’s what keeps us from being mentally oppressed, defeated, and out-talked. Attitude is a non-violent form of protection and confrontation—where would we be in the world without this tool? Surely not where we are; where you are, Mom, or where you’ve gotten me.

Mom, when people ask me where I get my attitude from, I tell them: you. And when they ask me where I got my drive, my work ethic, my good hair, and my sense of humor, I say you as well. I will always say this. And I’ll tell them of the times you made me keep on pursuing things I’d half given up on because I thought they were “too hard.” I’ll tell them about the days you sat my siblings and me down and lectured us about how we allow people to treat us and what it means to be a young African-American boy or girl in this world. I’ll tell them of the times you pushed us to be better versions of ourselves. I’ll tell them where I got everything.

When I’m asked why I am the way I am—why I refuse to allow others to hurt me with their words or actions, why I think and speak about things openly and without fear, and why I think about things in a more complex and emotionally-responsive light—I’ll tell them.

I’ll complain to you about the arguments between us that leave me wondering about how God made us so much alike that we hardly even noticed.

But I’ll tell them about you.

Love,

Malahni

Of Thee I Zing: America’s Cultural Decline from Muffin Tops to Body Shots

Of Thee I Zing: America’s Cultural Decline from Muffin Tops to Body Shots

My culture is depraved, Not sure it can be saved . . . Of Thee I Zing. Land filled with STDs, Pants way down to the knees, Nary a “thanks” or “please” This is going to sting. . . . While Laura Ingraham was walking through a Northern Virginia shopping mall one Saturday afternoon, it all became clear to her: Our country is in grave peril. Our culture of ignorance, arrogance, and gluttony undermines our present and endangers our future. Everywhere she turned, she saw signs of the impending disaster: zombie teens texting each other across a caf table; a man having his eyebrows threaded at a kiosk; a fiftyish woman shoehorned into a tube top and skinny jeans; and a storefront ad featuring a Victoria’s Secret model spilling out of her push-up bra and into the faces of young passersby. Ingraham wondered, “Is this it? Is this what our forefathers fought for? What my parents struggled for? I wonder if Victoria’s Secret is still having that two-for-one sale?” In an act of patriotic intervention, the most-listened-to woman in talk radio casts her satirical eye upon all that ails American society. In this sharp-witted comic romp, Laura Ingraham takes you on a guided tour through ten levels of our cultural hell. You know we’re in trouble when . . . Airplane seats shrink-just as the passengers expand. Celebrity baby names go from the peculiar (Apple, Stetson, and Daisy Boo) to the pathetic (Bamboo, Blanket, and Bronx). Price:

Barack Obama Advises His 2009 Self In Hilarious Jimmy Fallon Clip

If you had the chance, what advice would you give to your younger self?

Jimmy Fallon has hilariously imagined what the President Barack Obama of today would say to himself when he first entered the White House in 2009.

And POTUS’ biggest tip? Well, apparently it’s all about the hand sanitizer.

With the election so close, President Obama’s time in office is winding down,” Fallon said on “The Tonight Show” on Friday.

“Of course, Obama has changed a lot during his Presidency,” the comedian added, before playing the amusing spliced and diced interview between the “duo.”

Check out the fun in the clip above.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Silly Animal Stories for Kids

Silly Animal Stories for Kids

Can such things really happen to animals? Of course they can and of course they do in this book. Spike is an enterprising spider. When he is washed away in the bath he forms a water park ride for his friends. He is blown out from a fan and forms the flying spiders but does not succeed in making pop stars of his wife and daughters, a disaster. After many adventures and mishaps he finally retires. Sebastion Seagull doesn’t want to leave the nest when he grows up – he thinks flying is too dangerous and not natural. He suffers humiliation until one day he becomes an unlikely hero. Squidgy is a forgetful squirrel having all sorts of problems until one day he escapes and finds his way. Ellie is a gorgeous baby elephant but very spoilt and very vain. She refuses to use her trunk to eat as she thinks it disgusting. Her mother despairs but her father, the big bull elephant solves the problem. Ozzie Ostrich has an identity crisis. He is a bird but he can’t sing, hop or fly. He tries and trains hard then one day he becomes famous. Winnie Worm is worried. She is born with eyes but no other worms understand because they can’t see what she is going on about. Mr. Wiseworm solves her problem. Beryl is a not so busy bee. She is a nuisance until one day she finds something she is good at. Freddie is an antisocial fly until one day he is exposed as silly and vain and decides to change. Tina Turtle is a beautiful real life story of a young boy who rescues a gorgeous tiny terrapin from a plastic pot on sale at a school fete and the bond they come to share.

Focusing On Error In Polls Isn’t Sexy, But It’s Necessary

It’s that point in the election cycle where if you don’t like the results of one poll, you can wait five minutes and another one will come out. People are inundated with numbers, which they might not know how to interpret.

Polls contain “error” in them, which means the numbers are estimates of what people think, rather than precise data points. Pollsters and journalists will usually provide a “margin of error” that approximates how much the numbers might change due to the random chance of who is selected to participate in the poll.

But analysts know there’s more error in a poll than this margin indicates. Some say that’s why we shouldn’t report margins of error at all. And we often don’t do a good job of explaining any type of error to audiences.

Nate Cohn provided an excellent demonstration of polling error not accounted for in a margin of error by having four different sets of pollsters re-analyze data from The New York Times Upshot/ Siena Florida poll. Their results ranged from Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton being 4 points ahead to her GOP opponent Donald Trump ahead by 1 point, using the exact same data but creating their own likely voter calculations. This is an important lesson in non-sampling sources of error: The choices an analyst makes about how to define likely voters can substantially affect the outcome of the poll.

But Cohn takes the lesson a step further and argues that the existence of these other sources of error mean margin of error wasn’t worth reporting in the original pollClearly, the reported margin of error due to sampling, even when including a design effect (which purports to capture the added uncertainty of weighting), doesn’t even come close to capturing total survey error,” Cohn states.

It isn’t actually unusual for polls not to report a margin of error. Some surveys don’t report margins of error or even mention the concept, particularly online surveys which don’t use random sampling ― the basis for a margin of error calculation. But the NYT Upshot/Siena poll was conducted by telephone, and a margin of error typically accompanies these types of polls.

Not reporting a margin of error brings up a big concern for those of us trying to communicate with readers about polling: If there’s not a prominently listed margin of error, do they understand that there’s error? Do they have any idea how much error there might be?

Unlike analysts, who know there’s error and can quickly estimate a margin of error by looking at a poll’s sample size, most readers aren’t thinking about the uncertainty in polling estimates. It’s up to the experts to explain it.

The question, then, is how best to explain survey error. Cohn chose to mention it, but not give it an exact figure in the poll release story: “All polls, of course, are subject to a margin of error. But the margin of error does not include many other potential sources of error, like the choices of the many undecided voters, or decisions made by pollsters about how to adjust the poll.”

This is a good start. However, that still leaves readers to wonder just how much error there is in the poll. How much error do surveys usually have? Most non-experts probably don’t have the answer to that question, so could assume the survey only has half a percentage point of error. Or they might assume it has 8 points of error.

It also still doesn’t address error based on people who couldn’t be reached because of how the poll was conducted (“coverage error,” such as those who rely solely on mobile phones in a landline telephone survey), people who didn’t respond to the survey (“nonresponse error”) and potential bias in how the questions were asked and answers recorded (“measurement error”).

We should be able to address error better in the polling field. Pollsters release hundreds of polls in an election cycle, often with great care given to how the poll is conducted and how the sample is designed. It’s time to put more care into estimating and describing the error in those polls. Doing so is important to both the general public trying to understand polls and to pollsters themselves: If we’re providing realistic expectations of error, polling “misses” that are actually reasonable based on expected survey error might be better understood.

But that means putting aside the horserace for a while and focusing on the errors. Unfortunately the horserace is what drives attention and traffic ― and both pollsters and journalists need that to survive in their industries. Technical discussions of error (like this one) aren’t going to get many clicks.

However, Nate Cohn and the four sets of pollsters he worked with took the time to dive into the errors with very useful results. It’s a lesson many experts will likely use well beyond this year’s election. So maybe the risk is worthwhile.

7 Things You Need To Know To Tame The Monkey Mind

The monkey mind is something every modern human is familiar with. It’s that incessant thought stream that no matter how hard you try never seems to settle down.

It’s the worries that keep you up at night, the assumptions that cause you grief, the projections you make about the future and the regrets and sentiments you go over from the past.

To tame the monkey mind takes commitment and a deep inner desire for peace. Calming the monkey mind is the first step on the path towards life mastery.

When you consciously realize that your thoughts are energy, and that the energetic implications of what you maintain focus on are actually creating your life to be based in either joy or suffering, you can be empowered to take control over your monkey mind and access the peace of mind that makes sheer existence a true gift.

1. Seek Common Ground and Connection

Division is a distraction from the divine. When you see yourself as a lone wolf, you lose sight of the pack, and you struggle to survive, let alone thrive. Yet when you can look around and feel a connection to all the people you encounter, everything changes.

You start to focus on connection instead of seeing everything as separate. Nothing is separate. The sun in the sky keeps us all alive. The people around you complaining about their mundane daily disturbances are going through the motions just like you are, they’re merely at a different point in their personal evolution.

Instead of focusing on your independence and feeding your loneliness with divisive thought patterns, bring the focus back to finding common ground.

When you do this you shift your entire perspective.

2. Look Deeper Than the Story

Society, the people you surround yourself with, your past experiences and your present belief system all work to strengthen the story you’re narrating in your head all day long. It’s so easy to attach to your story and your thoughts are the glue that binds you there.

If you struggle with self-esteem and that’s a part of your story then without a doubt your thoughts are the roots keeping that belief alive.

When you can remain present and focus on how you feel in each moment you can start to release the constant narration and let go of the belief structures embedded in your story that hold you back from realizing your true potential.

3. Realize YOU Are Not Your Thoughts

Endless thoughts flow through your mind. A thousand thoughts pass through your mind every hour, and you have two options.

The first option is to allow your mind to act like a hose. Thoughts stream in through the top of the funnel and are directed out, they’re let go of, and they flow elsewhere without attachment.

The second option is to allow your mind to act like a filter. Thoughts attempt to pass through the filter but they get trapped. The filter of your mind clings to them for analysis and attachment. The filter gets all clogged up full of thoughts based in what you want and what you don’t want.

When you believe that every thought matters, that every thought that enters your brain is you, and that every thought needs to be examined, you become overburdened, overwhelmed, confused, directionless and prone to overanalyzing. You create internal resistance because you believe on a subconscious level that you are your thoughts.

When you allow your thoughts to show up and pass away without clinging on to them in an attempt to analyze and integrate, you access a freedom that few people embody. You enter into a vibrational state of allowing which is expansive and creates space for you to access the peace and pure joy of being.

4. Let Go of Excuses

I don’t have time. I’m too busy. These are everyone’s favorite excuses for not allowing connection, acceptance, and peace to enter your life on the level of experience.

When you’re ready to let go of the monkey mind and free yourself from the chains that keep you stuck in your head and separated from the world around you, you stop making excuses.

Breaking down the mental constructs that you’ve been attached to and strengthening for your entire life is no easy task, but it is possible and the more excuses you make, the longer it will take to break away from the mental chatter.

5. Develop a Drama Free Mentality

There’s a tendency in our society to become addicted to drama. The boldest example of this is television, you flick on the TV and suddenly you’re immersed in a world wrought with drama.

Breaking the cycle of drama will create more peace in your life, thoughts and relationships. Over time you can consciously train your brain to let go of the things you would normally make a big dramatic deal over.

Your life can be whatever you want it to be, a soap opera or a peaceful expansive existence that plays out moment by moment.

6. Release Judgement

What were they thinking? What’s wrong with them? Why are they doing that?

Judgment creates an inner resistance, a pushing against what is without ever changing what is. When you allow yourself to move into acceptance, even with the things you don’t particularly like, the monkey mind backs down.

The monkey mind thrives on judgment and drama, it’s the fuel that feeds the fire of your thoughts.

When you would normally jump into judgment, whether it’s over someone else’s actions or your own, try to practice allowing things to just be as they are. Allowing isn’t the same as condoning, it’s simply an energetic shift which helps you release attachment and aversion, the monkey mind’s favorite snacks.

7. Practice Awareness

Practice awareness of the thoughts streaming through your mind. You can’t one day wake up and decide to tame the monkey mind without bringing awareness of the thoughts themselves to the forefront. Awareness is the balm that soothes the irritation the monkey mind loves to create.

Awareness is different from attachment because it integrates with the energy of allowing. Thoughts pass by and your awareness shines a light upon them without the incessant desire to unconsciously attach to their meaning.

In every moment you can bring awareness to the forefront of what you’re feeling and thinking. When you notice anger and irritation bubbling up let yourself become consciously aware of these thoughts and your reaction to them and then just let them go.

5 Body Imbalances You Might Unknowingly Experience

By: Cassie Shortsleeve

Technology has improved our lives in many ways, but not without some consequences, including these five common bodily aches. Here’s how to address the pain without pulling the plug.

There’s no doubt that technology has its perks, from allowing us to work from all corners of the earth to meditating via an app at the touch of a finger. But despite the many advantages technology brings us every single day, it also has a downside–one that can be very painful if ignored. Americans suffer from a number of ailments relating to technology, including a type of back and shoulder pain that is now often referred to as “tech neck” (the repeated act of craning your neck forward and down over a screen, resulting in discomfort that can lead to strain and stiffness). The solution, however, isn’t to disconnect and revert back to powerless Pilgrim living. Instead, heed this advice from Sonima.com‘s pain and anatomy advisor, Pete Egoscue: “If an activity is hurting us, take a look at the body. Pain is the body’s way of trying to tell us something.”

Related: Understanding the Source of Back Pain

What is your body saying? It could be hinting at an imbalance. Maybe you’re not vertically loaded properly–meaning your head, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles aren’t stacking up right. Or perhaps you’re just not bearing weight evenly, says Egoscue, creator of the Egoscue Method for pain-free living.

To find out exactly what your body is telling you, tune in. Once you start paying attention to the subtle signals (usually accompanied by a minor ache), stretch or shift positions to continue enjoying your TV, laptop, smartphone or whatever device is captivating your attention in comfort and with peace of body and mind. Use Egoscue’s guide below to help translate your body’s messages and take appropriate action.

Related: Simple Stretches for Office Workers

When this hurts: BACK, SHOULDERS, HEAD
Your body may be saying…change the way you sit.
Sitting with your shoulders slumped forward, hip flexors shortened, and back rounded can put extra stress on your lower back, which may curve into a ‘C’ shape instead of its natural ‘S’ shape. This pain doesn’t come from only sitting, but also from being misaligned. Your body is compensating, Egoscue says.
Listen and learn: Look down at your feet. You want them hip-width apart facing forward with toes slightly turned in. Your knees will want to come together, but keep them out, he says. Then pull your shoulders down, relax your abs, and roll up and forward with your hips, putting an arch back into your lower back with your pelvis. In this position, he says, you’re vertically loaded. “That’s the way you sit without effort. Your body has just adapted and adjusted to what you have conditioned it to do.” Sit like this and you could notice back and shoulder pain dissipate and even see improvements in issues, like constipation and digestion, he says.

To learn the four other body imbalances that you might unknowingly experience, continue reading the original article on Sonima.com.

The 6 Secrets of Self-Control

2016-09-09-1473458162-6578277-TheSixSecretsofSelfControlHP.jpg

What is it about self-control that makes it so difficult to rely on? Self-control is a skill we all possess (honest); yet we tend to give ourselves little credit for it. Self-control is so fleeting for most that when Martin Seligman and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania surveyed two million people and asked them to rank order their strengths in 24 different skills, self-control ended up in the very bottom slot.

Watch Tommy Boy Explain His Struggles With Self-Control

When it comes to self-control, it is so easy to focus on our failures that our successes tend to pale in comparison. And why shouldn’t they? Self-control is an effort that’s intended to help achieve a goal. Failing to control yourself is just that–a failure. If you’re trying to avoid digging into that bag of chips after dinner because you want to lose a few pounds and you succeed Monday and Tuesday nights only to succumb to temptation on Wednesday by eating four servings’ worth of the empty calories, your failure outweighs your success. You’ve taken two steps forward and four steps back.

With this success/failure dichotomy in mind, I give you six strategies for self-control. Some are obvious, others counter-intuitive, but all will help you eliminate those pesky failures and ensure your efforts to boost your willpower are successful enough to keep you headed in the right direction for achieving your goals.

Self-Control Secret #1 – Meditate

Meditation actually trains your brain to become a self-control machine. Even simple techniques like mindfulness, which involves taking as little as five minutes a day to focus on nothing more than your breathing and your senses, improves your self-awareness and your brain’s ability to resist destructive impulses. Buddhist monks appear calm and in control for a reason.

Self-Control Secret #2 – Eat

File this one in the counter-intuitive category, especially if you’re having trouble controlling your eating. Your brain burns heavily into your stores of glucose when attempting to exert self-control. If your blood sugar is low, you are far more likely to succumb to destructive impulses. Sugary foods spike your sugar levels quickly and leave you drained and vulnerable shortly thereafter. Eating something that provides a slow burn for your body, such as whole grain rice or meat, will give you a longer window of self-control. So, if you’re having trouble keeping yourself out of the company candy bin when you’re hungry, make sure you eat something else if you want to have a fighting chance.

Self-Control Secret #3 – Exercise

Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. If you’re having trouble resisting the impulse to walk over to the office next door to let somebody have it, just keep on walking. You should have the impulse under control by the time you get back.

Self-Control Secret #4 – Sleep

When you are tired, your brain cells’ ability to absorb glucose is highly diminished. As I explained in Secret #2, your brain’s ability to control impulses is nil without glucose. What’s worse, without enough sleep you are more likely to crave sugary snacks to compensate for low glucose levels. So, if you’re trying to exert self-control over your eating, getting a good night’s sleep–every night–is one of the best moves you can make.

Self-Control Secret #5 – Ride the Wave

Desire has a strong tendency to ebb and flow like the tide. When the impulse you need to control is strong, waiting out this wave of desire is usually enough to keep yourself in control. The rule of thumb here is to wait at least 10 minutes before succumbing to temptation. You’ll often find that the great wave of desire is now little more than a ripple that you have the power to step right over.

Self-Control Secret #6 – Forgive Yourself

A vicious cycle of failing to control oneself followed by feeling intense self-hatred and disgust is common in attempts at self-control. These emotions typically lead to over-indulging in the offending behavior. When you slip up, it is critical that you forgive yourself and move on. Don’t ignore how the mistake makes you feel; just don’t wallow in it. Instead, shift your attention to what you’re going to do to improve yourself in the future.

Putting These Strategies to Work

The important thing to remember is you have to give these strategies the opportunity to work. This means recognizing the moments where you are struggling with self-control and, rather than giving in to impulse, taking a look at the Six Secrets and giving them a go before you give in.

Foot Drop

What is foot drop?
Foot drop is the inability to raise the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the tibialis anterior muscle that lifts the foot (Figure 1). A common symptom of foot drop is a high steppage gait, often characterized by raising the thigh up in an exaggerated fashion while walking. When a person with foot drop walks, the foot slaps down onto the floor.

2016-09-15-1473960001-2882617-foot1.PNG

Foot drop usually results from an injury to the peroneal nerve which is susceptible to injury at any point of its course. The peroneal nerve begins from the L4, L5, S1 and S2 nerve roots and joins the tibial nerve to form the sciatic nerve (Figure 2). The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and runs through the buttock and lower limb.

2016-09-15-1473964839-1700154-foot2.PNG

In the lower thigh, just above the back of the knee, the sciatic nerve divides into two nerves, the tibial and peroneal nerves, which innervate different parts of the lower leg (Figure 3). The common peroneal nerve then travels anterior around the fibular neck, dividing into superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The deep peroneal nerve gives innervation to the tibialis anterior muscle of the lower leg, which is responsible for dorsiflexion of the ankle (Figure 4).

2016-09-15-1473964901-5244603-Foot4.PNG

Conditions Causing Foot Drop (Figure 5):
A herniated disc compressing the L5 nerve root may cause foot drop. Another cause of foot drop can be a lumbosacral plexus injury, pelvic fracture. Foot drop may also be caused by a sciatic nerve injury, like a hip dislocation. The common peroneal division of the sciatic nerve is commonly injured during fracture dislocation injuries involving the hip. An injury to the knee, such as a knee dislocation may also cause foot drop. In the event of a knee dislocation, it is important to check for common peroneal nerve and popliteal artery injury. In established compartment syndrome, foot drop is a late finding. Irreversible muscle and nerve ischemia occurs in patients if fasciotomy is not performed. Fasciotomy should be done early. Four hours of ischemia may be tolerated but by eight hours, the damage is often irreversible.

2016-09-15-1473964936-7620194-foot5.PNG

Treatment of Peroneal Nerve Injury/Foot Drop:
If a disc herniation in the low back is impinging on the nerve and causing symptoms of foot drop, then the herniated disc should be treated or removed. EMG and nerve studies should be done for the patient. Recovery may take one year to 18 months. The big toe will be the last to recover. If recovery is not achieved, explore the nerve for repair, graft or tendon transfer.

It Looks Like Donald Trump Is Done Talking About Birther Stuff

MIAMI ― On Friday evening, Donald Trump talked about how terrible American inner cities are; he talked about how many jobs his energy plan would produce; he talked about how hard he campaigns.

What he didn’t talk about was his statement earlier that day declaring ― after five years of falsely claiming otherwise ― that President Barack Obama was born in the United States.

Trump did not allude to the issue at all in 45 minutes of remarks in a state with large African-American and Latino populations. People in both groups have found his leadership in the “birther” movement offensive because it tried to delegitimize the nation’s first black president.

While Trump’s aides and surrogates attempted Friday to blame birtherism on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, Florida Republican Party chairman Blaise Ingoglia said he considers the matter closed.

“Mr. Trump came out and made that statement. That should put it to bed,” Ingoglia said.

Whether minority voters agree with him enough that they help Trump carry the state in November remains to be seen. The GOP nominee has polled exceptionally poorly with both African-American and Latino voters nationally, although the large percentage of Republican-leaning Cuban-American voters in Florida has given him relatively stronger support among Hispanics there than in other key swing states.

At the Miami rally, Trump largely gave what’s become his standard stump speech of late, adding a line promising to help the people of Cuba stand up to their communist leaders and boasting about his Florida golf courses.

“I have a lot of employees, and I pay them a lot of money. And by the way, a lot of African-American employees, a lot of Hispanic employees ― a lot. And they’re very happy,” Trump said. “They like Donald Trump.”

He visited a community center in the city’s Little Haiti neighborhood prior to arriving at the downtown James Knight Center auditorium, which was filled to its 5,500-person capacity with his supporters.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

American Men Are Pretty Happy With Their Penises

2016-09-16-1474064741-45703-14austinpowers.w710.h473.2x.jpg

By Jesse Singal

For understandable reasons, society’s conversation about body satisfaction tends to focus on women. Women, it can safely be argued, face a lot more social pressure to look good all the time, to feel ashamed of their bodies, and to harp on minor imperfections.

Men aren’t immune from all that, though. And one particularly painful area where it manifests, according to sexual health researchers, is in insecurity about their penises. This can lead to some bad outcomes. As a team led by Thomas Gaither, a urologist at the University of California, San Francisco, point out in a new study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, “Case reports have shown men undergo risky procedures, such as silicon injections, to lengthen their penis and increase penile girth.” In addition, “Genital piercings, silicone injection, and subcutaneous implant are increasingly common and are associated with numerous complications.”

Related: Here Are Your Penis Beauty Standards

Gaither and his colleagues wanted to better understand how men view their penises, so they conducted what they say is the first nationally representative survey using a newly developed scale called the Index of Male Genital Image, or IMGI. It consists of 14 statements ranked on a score of 1-7 involving penis length, girth, and so on — a score of 1-3 is coded as “dissatisfied,” while 4-7 is coded as satisfied. They got results from 3,996 men, the sample drawn from 18-to-65-year-olds who weren’t institutionalized.

Comparing those who landed in the “satisfied” (greater than 4.0) versus “unsatisfied” (4.0 or lower) buckets when the scores were averaged, the researchers didn’t find any statistically significant differences in penile satisfaction when it came to age, “race, marital status, education, location, income, or sexual partners.” Penile (dis)satisfaction appears to be pretty much constant across these categories.

Overall:

A total of 3433 (85.9%) reported an average greater than 4 per item on the IMGI and thus were classified as satisfied. Men reported highest satisfaction with the shape of their glans (64%), followed by circumcision status (62%), girth of erect penis (61%), texture of skin (60%), and size of testicles (59%). Men reported dissatisfaction with the size of their flaccid penis (27 %), length of erect penis (19%), girth of erect penis (15%), amount of pubic hair (14%), and amount of semen (12%). Men reported neutrality with the scent of their genitals (44%), genital veins (43%), location of urethra (42%), color of genitals (40%), and amount of pubic hair (36%). Of note, those who were extremely dissatisfied (score of 1 or 2) reported dissatisfaction with their flaccid penis (10.0%), length of erect penis (5.7 %), and girth of erect penis (4.5%).

There were some decent-size differences in terms of the sexual experiences of men who were satisfied versus dissatisfied with their penises. Those who were satisfied were less likely to be sexually active (73.5 percent versus 86.3 percent), and engaged in less daily and weekly sexual activity. There were also slight but statistically significant differences in the percentage of dissatisfied versus satisfied men who reported having had vaginal or receptive oral sex (85.2 percent versus 89.5 percent, and 61 percent versus 66.2 percent). The obvious question here is what’s causing what: To what extent are men who are dissatisfied with their penises less likely to seek out sex as a result of their insecurity? A correlational self-report study can’t answer that, nor can it answer whether these mens’ likes and dislikes were shared by their sexual partners.

Related: Why Is No One Interested in Vagina Size?

It’s interesting that a sizable minority of men reported dissatisfaction with their testicle size or glans shape. On the one hand, in a survey like this you are explicitly asking about certain features, so these responses don’t mean that they are wandering around obsessing over this stuff. (It would be another thing entirely if you asked men to generate an open-ended list of body features they didn’t like and these kept popping up.) But on the other: It’s an interesting comparison to what women go through, because it highlights the fact that at least some of the things both men and women worry about probably aren’t, in fact, of much import to anyone else. If you’re a guy, the odds that a partner is going to care that much about the size of your testicles or the “shape of your glans” — that’s something I can honestly say I had never even thought about before reading this article, and which the researchers note “has little anatomic variability” — are probably pretty low.

More broadly, the main takeaway, as a first-pass attempt at understanding this stuff, is that men mostly feel pretty happy with their penises. Which can maybe explain the epidemic of unsolicited photos.

Trump Will Win By Dumbing Down The Electorate-Is Vomiting Preferable?

I am an independent so that gives me more license to say what I am about to than if I was a Democrat, Republican, Green Party, or Libertarian. In the case of judging what has been produced so far by either Trump or Clinton on the state of their physical and mental well being, I have been a health care lawyer for 43 years—reading, judging and analyzing thousands of pages of medical records and reports. With this as my background, there are three items that stand out to show why Trump’s strategy is based on dumbing down the American voter that will get him the presidency.

First, let’s address his health records. No, I am not a medical doctor; again, I am a health care lawyer into my fourth decade of practice, but one with a particularly long and lengthy professional pedigree who has read and reviewed volumes of records and reports over that time. I also have taken note of Trump’s latest swipe at Clinton’s state of health last night while he campaigned in Ohio, sarcastically questioning whether Clinton could withstand an hour of campaigning as he did yesterday. [Evidently, Trump believes when someone is down, nee, off the campaign trail due to a health reason as Clinton has been, it is better to step on her rather than to wish her well].

I first read Trump’s physician’s report of December 15, 2015, you know, the one by scraggly and longhaired Harold Bornstein, the duly licensed gastroenterologist. The letter lists the doctor’s credentials that are out of date. It was also one of the poorest, less than one-page letters filled with unheard of adjectives to describe the physical condition of a patient, misspellings and non-specific findings that only a careless physician, or a quack, would write that I have ever seen. Yet, and here is the important point, a certain segment of the American voter seems not to care; they consider it irrelevant perhaps, or maybe are convinced that the correspondence professionally and adequately reflects Trump’s health care condition. After all, that is what Trump tells them, right? Equally true is that Trump doesn’t apparently care either, figuring that the American voter that is his audience neither cares nor has the intellectual ability to care in a pragmatic way.

Trump then takes his medical condition to new heights by showboating it on the Dr. Oz TV show, as if following a well-scripted writing. Recall, Oz asks him about why he won’t show his medical records. Then, as if on cue, Trump looks to the audience and asks whether he should; they respond, and…drum roll please…he takes from his suit pocket a document that he then gives to Oz to look at. Hollywood at its best, huh? Trump no doubt believes that the American voter he wants are those that went gaga over his Apprentice reality shows, so they obviously will become “verclempt” about his revealing more of his health via Dr. Mehmet Oz. Trump is a showman, a carny, well, a con, thinking maybe his voters consider him the messiah that will provide them manna from heaven once he is in office. Not.

I then read the two-page, single spaced letter dated September 14, 2016 by Dr. Lisa Bardack, Clinton’s personal physician. She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and Chair of Internal Medicine, CareMount Medical, a clinical affiliate of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). MGH is one of the most prestigious hospitals our country has to offer patients that require care. The contents of this letter was composed using proper language, syntax and spelling; adhered to the grammar rules of the English language; was articulated in clear and concise terms describing medical findings of Clinton’s current physical and mental states, and lab results, expected during an annual physical (including a rather robust chronology of events preceding the diagnosis of Clinton’s pneumonia, the actual diagnosis and care to be taken thereafter); and concluded, “She continues to remain healthy and fit to serve as President of the United States.” [The words so highlighted are mine.] This is the type of letter I would expect from a well trained, educated and trustworthy medical doctor, again, based on my four+ decades representing health care providers and institutions. It reflects a complete document representing what it states to represent. Despite this letter, Clinton seems to be subject to more criticism for not revealing more of her medical history.

Next, if you ask those supporting Trump why they will vote for him, they say something like he is a great businessman; look how wealthy he is; with his background, he can do nothing but improve our economy; be a strong commander-in-chief; and remedy the [supposed] ills of the last eight years. But when these voters-to-be are asked whether they care about knowing anything about his finances, charitable givings, income stream from various sources as detailed in tax returns Trump has not produced (and despite Clinton, Kane and Pence producing their own now), they shrug their shoulders, as if to say, who gives a damn. So, these voters don’t care about Trump’s physical and mental health, and now don’t care about his finances as can be gleaned from federal tax returns. He says he can’t reveal them because he is under audit, but the other day, he says he will reveal them. Still, his voters simply don’t care. And this brings me to my second point.

Yesterday, a very detailed report was published by author Kurt Eichenwald in NEWSWEEK, titled, “How The Trump’s Organization’s Foreign Business Ties Could Upend U.S. National Security” (http://www.newsweek.com/2016/09/23/donald-trump-foreign-business-deals-national-security-498081.html). It is quite telling—and what more of the media should be doing—because it is a step in unraveling as if under a microscope how the Trump Organization (actually it is composed of hundreds of corporate entities) is—in lay terms—wheeling and dealing all over the world and with ties to shady, criminal, and not-so-shady entities that can well compromise our country’s national security independence if Trump were to ever become president. Trump’s conflict of interests would be everywhere if and when Trump had to decide whether his business interests would first have to prevail over his securing our nation’s interests with foreign powers. More critically, this report will be a frightening indictment of him for all voters who care to know the contents of it, or to take the time to go to the website just listed to read it. But, as with the (lack of) health records, and his income tax records, the voter Trump wants is one who really does not care if we go to war with a leader to whom Trump is in debt, or to a leader who has an important confidant to whom Trump is indebted. Maybe that is the same type voter that was glued to the TV set to watch The Apprentice every time it aired?

And when Trump, even his daughter, Ivanka, says if he becomes president he will put his company into a blind trust run by his children, Trump’s voters believe him. Yet, this maneuver is illegal since it will never be “blind”, and his children cannot be independent trustees as required by law, because, well, they are his children and that receive substantial income from the business to be parked in that type trust.

My third point is a video report masterfully put together and articulated by Keith Olbermann for GQ Magazine, titled, “Keith Olbermann Is Back, And He Thinks Donald Trump Is A Demonic Messiah”. The subscript to the piece is, “demonic messiah in Oompa Loompa’s clothing” (http://huffingtonpost.com/entry/keith-olbermann-donald-trump_us_57d930fee4b0aa4b722d6e90). It is a must for any reader to view, for he lists, seriatim, 176 of Trump’s lies, deceptions and god-awful affiliations. Olbermann takes Trump apart in 17+ minutes that no media person or outlet has yet to do! Independents should puke after watching it rather than consider voting for Trump! But not his supporters—they apparently would care less…once more.

A colleague, long ago classmate of mine, and noted and very accomplished author and writer (four novels, including the National Book Award for his Middle Passage, MacArthur Foundation Fellow, three collections of short stories, over 20 screenplays, and recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature), screenwriter, and University of Washington Professor of English Emeritus, Charles Johnson, once told me concerning a matter unrelated to politics that when judging a person over time, she or he should look at, and be judged by, a “body of work”. Necessarily, such a compendium will have some “downs” tossed in with mostly “ups”. This, therefore, is how the candidates for United States president should also be judged immediately before any voter goes into the voting booth. But a certain segment of the American voter could care less, as we continually see on a daily basis.

For Trump, he has no relevant, credible body of work other than his lies, deceptions and deceitful language; he can only be judged by what he says, again ever the showman without depth or credibility. His cameo appearances, like with the Mexican president in Mexico City recently that called him out as a liar, or his fly-in to a Black church in Flint, Michigan yesterday when he was admonished by the Pastor while on stage in front of speaking to the assembled is all he thinks he need do to satisfy the American voter, even though his body of work overwhelmingly includes racism, bigotry, xenophobia, misogyny, declarations that Mexicans are rapists and a federal judge of Mexican descent incapable of deciding matters fairly due to his heritage; criticizing Gold Star families; making fun of the disabled; showing his incompetency; belittling women; and questioning war heroes because they became POWs. Again, listen to Olbermann’s video.

In contrast, with Clinton, we have seen decades of her body of work that shows a deep and un-abiding commitment to a work ethic to assist all levels of the American electorate on whose behalf she has advocated or ever been sworn to serve, particularly children from poor or from disadvantaged households. Trump does not even hold a candle to her experience and knowledge. Yet the “show” Trump puts on daily seems to trump (excuse the pun) Clinton.

It is a sad commentary on the American electorate of which I am a part that there exists a segment of us that cares not about Trump’s (lack of) any body of work that qualifies him to become president and who cares equally not about his lying, lack of qualifications, mental instability, and inability to learn or to be taught what it takes to be president. What will it take to ensure his defeat? Coming out and voting! The stakes are just too dangerously high for our country to allow a Trump to become a resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

As an independent like myself, I would think others similarly positioned would consider vomiting a much preferable experience than hearing the words, President Trump.

Don’t Choke: How To Conquer Paralysis By Analysis

It’s one thing to achieve mastery. It is quite another to be able to perform under pressure. Psychologist Sian Beilock, author of Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting it Right When You Have To, defines choking as suboptimal performance, not just poor performance.

It’s a performance that is inferior to what you can do and have done in the past and occurs when you feel pressure to get everything right.

The most painful part about choking is that you know you can and have done better.

Choking can occur regardless of the number of hours spent practicing. Examples in sports abound. Golfer Greg Norman painfully choked at the 1996 US Masters. Entering the final round he had a six-stroke lead over Nick Faldo and then blew it. Snow boarding champion Shaun White famously missed winning gold at the 2014 Olympic winter games.

Why does the brain sabotage performance just when it matters most? Beilock believes that overthinking the situation is the problem. She calls it paralysis by analysis. Paralysis by analysis occurs when we try too hard to control every little thing. This over-attention to detail interferes with the fluidity and flow of well-rehearsed skills and ultimately undermines the ability to do something that would normally be relatively easy.

You don’t need to be a star athlete to experience choking. It can happen to any of us at key moments. A student who fails even though she was prepared for a test, an entrepreneur who freezes while presenting to potential investors, a well-qualified applicant who blows a key interview.

Try the following tricks to help you stay at the top of your game:

1. Say Om

Meditating before the big event calms the mind, reduces anxiety and increases cognitive horsepower.

2. Practice Under Pressure

Train under conditions that simulate the stress of the actual event. This will mentally prepare you for the real deal

3. Have a “Go-To Mantra

For golfers, a simple thought like “Smooth” or “Nice and Easy” just before hitting the ball can do the trick.

4. Whistle While you Work

According to Beilock:

If the tasks are automatic and you have done them a thousand times in the past, a mild distraction such as whistling can help them run off more smoothly under pressure.

5. Put Pen to Paper

Taking a few minutes to write down your worries before a test or presentation will help you stay focused on the topic and reduce forgetfulness due to stress.

Don’t let your brain sabotage your success.

how to find a workout you can commit to

Frustrated by Your Fitness Routine? Here’s How to Find a Better One for Your Needs

At one point or another, we’ve all enthusiastically started a fitness routine, only to quit it a month later. We hear about a great new workout and get swept up in all the promises of amazing physical transformation. After a bit of research, we dive in head first, proud of our newfound commitment. We initially feel fit and rejuvenated. However, a few weeks later, when we still haven’t seen any change to our scale or bodies, discouragement seeps in.

2016-09-15-1473935778-3816256-huffpowellb15.jpg

Sound familiar? How many of us have then abandoned the fitness plan despite all the money spent on new workout clothes, equipment or classes? It doesn’t have to be like this. A good way to get off this fitness “rollercoaster” is by changing our approach to it. Instead of focusing on the end result – losing weight, toning or gaining muscle, getting healthier – we need to focus on the process of getting fit. And yes, it is a hard, sweaty, grueling process. The sooner we acknowledge this, the sooner we will succeed in reaching our goals.

Commitment is Key

We all have different bodies and different needs. It shouldn’t surprise anyone, then, that each of us responds differently to certain types of fitness routines and exercise. However, this individuality is often absent from the marketing of fitness trends. We need to remember that there is no one fitness routine that is perfect for everyone.

Keep in mind that no matter our body weight, height or fitness level, the best exercise programs are the ones we can commit to over the long haul. There won’t be any physical results without consistent effort and hard work. Even when we are too busy, too tired, or too sore, our bodies need to get used to daily physical activity. Plus, we need to find a suitable way to incorporate healthy eating into our daily lifestyles.

4 Questions to Point You in the Right Fitness Direction

To achieve optimum health and fitness, we need to listen more to our bodies. We need to let them guide us in finding and trying out different wellness options that we can incorporate into our lifestyles long-term. It won’t be easy, but it will be rewarding, physically as well as mentally.

So, how do we find a fitness routine and/or diet that will help us achieve long-term health and happiness? The next time you begin – or hear of – a new fitness plan and want to know if it’s the right one for you, ask yourself these four questions:

1. Is it enjoyable?

While you don’t have to be a diehard fan of the new workout, you should enjoy it enough to help keep you motivated even after the novelty wears off. It needs to motivate you even if you start feeling disappointed at not seeing results fast enough. You should also ask yourself “Do I hate doing it?” If the answer is yes, find an alternative.

2. Is it effective?

After two months of continued exercise, test your progress. Try a workout that you did when you first started. Can you do it at a faster pace? Can you complete more reps or lift heavier weights? Do you notice a difference in your body weight or measurements? How about your cholesterol level or blood pressure?

3. Can you maintain it?

We all juggle different work and life demands. No matter how much you love your new fitness endeavor, if you don’t have the time to commit to it, especially over the long term, it won’t be sustainable. Or worse, you can burn out if you approach it too intensely while trying to make up for lost time. Create a realistic fitness time table that you can stick to.

4. Do you have a support network?

In today’s digital era, you don’t have to look far to find an online community of like-minded people – no matter the activity or goal. Search social media or the Internet for forums or groups where you can find and voice support and information pertaining to your fitness goals. Such support will help you stay motivated and accountable, especially during challenging times.

A Way of Life

Before you can find the right fitness routine for you, it’s important to remember that one size does not fit all. Choose a plan or program that best fits with your personality and likes. After all, the most successful workout is the one that you do consistently. And remember to think of fitness and exercise as something you love to do as part of your daily lifestyle.

migr and Foreign Troops in British Service (2): 1803-15 (Men-at-Arms)

Following his study of the astonishing range of French Royalist and foreign mercenary units employed by Britain in the period 1793-1802 of the French Revolutionary Wars(Men-at-Arms 328), the author describes – often for the first time in an English language publication – the part played by their successors during the crucial years of the Napoleonic Wars. He covers not only relatively well-recorded units, such as Roll’s, Meuron’s and Watteville’s Swiss corps, but also the unjustly neglected Italians, Corsicans and Greeks, and such exotica as the African and Ceylon regiments. Uniform details of nearly 40 corps are based on impressive primary research, and this book and its companion volume make a genuinely new contribution to Napoleonic studies.

California Bans Orca Captivity And Breeding

The 2013 film “Blackfish” cast a spotlight on the cruelty of keeping orcas captive at marine theme parks ― with sometimes fatal results.

The film triggered a furore and legislators, particularly in California, vowed to ban orca captivity. Finally, in March — after years of boycotts and impending legal pressure — SeaWorld announced that it would end its orca breeding program as well as the theatrical shows that had featured its killer whales.

Now, California is hammering the nail into the coffin. Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation this week that will outlaw orca breeding and captivity programs in the state

The new law, which Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) authored, will also ban California parks from featuring orcas in performances for entertainment purposes. Starting in June 2017, killer whales in captivity can only be used for “educational presentations,” the Los Angeles Times reports. The legislation makes other exceptions for scientific and educational institutions that have orcas in their care.

SeaWorld said earlier this year that it planned to “fundamentally change” its business model, not just ending its orca breeding program but also stopping theatrical shows at its parks in San Diego, California, San Antonio, Texas, and Orlando, Florida.

The marine park said it would instead focus on education programs, and animal rescue and rehabilitation.

Though activists have pressed SeaWorld to free their captive orcas, it’s believed the animals will live out the remainder of their lives there.

“A lot of people just don’t realize that without facilities like SeaWorld, there are no places for these creatures to go,” said CEO Joel Manby in March, adding that the company cares for many sick and injured animals as part of its conservation initiative.

There are more than 50 orcas held in captivity in several U.S. states and at least eight countries worldwide, according to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation. SeaWorld’s parks are home to more than 20 of them.

ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. I’m A Failure!

During my career in Academia, I have noticed an unhealthy trend among students. It’s not drinking or the latest designer drug, but it can be more harmful than both. The trend is the obsessively self-critical thinking that happens when students do something that doesn’t go “right”. They fall into the judgmental trap of thinking they are a failure or something is wrong with them.

We, as a society, are taught from an early age that being hard on ourselves is the only way to make things better… or make us better. We are taught that being self-critical is the driving factor for success.

There is a side effect to this kind of thinking. As students find out that they are not the best in class, or that the projects they created don’t receive the applause they think they deserve, many immediately turn to an obsessive, self-critical way of thinking. They bash themselves and judge themselves negatively. As a result, students become more stressed out, feel insecure, become depressed, and question their own self-worth. If not addressed early on, this kind of thinking can make the college experience a miserable time for any student.

There is a way to fix this kind of thinking, but few talk about it. One of the greatest keys to being successful in life and eliminating obsessive self-criticism is having Mindful Self-Compassion. Yep, that’s right. Compassion for your “self.”

Wait, what? Self-compassion? I know, it sounds somewhat odd to say out loud, but rarely do we consider showing ourselves kindness. We often show friends more caring and compassion than we show ourself. We’ve been trained to be self-critical and self-judgmental. Self-compassion goes against the natural order… or so many think. Some even think that if we are self-compassionate, we are being lazy and complacent.

But research has found that self-criticism only sabotages us and produces a variety of negative consequences. According to Kristin Neff, Ph.D., Associate Professor in human development at the University of Texas at Austin, self-criticism can lead to lowered self-esteem, anxiety and depression. Mindful self-compassion, on the other hand, can lead to greater understanding and peace of mind… and yes, personal and professional success.

So what is “Mindful Self-Compassion”? Actually, it’s quite simple. It can be broken down into three parts.

1. Mindfulness: Mindfulness is about slowing your mind down to become aware of what you are thinking or doing in the present moment. It involves turning off your autopilot response and noticing what is going on, meaning that you pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without attaching any judgment to them.

Being mindful creates a distance between your thoughts or experiences and your reaction to them. It’s almost like observing your thoughts in the third person. You become aware of your thoughts and just notice what’s going on… you don’t sweep them under the rug and you don’t need to obsess about them either. You become aware, make a nonjudgmental note about the thought, (i.e. “There’s Mr. Negative again”.), tell yourself you’re okay, let the thought go, and return to the present moment.

Being mindful of self-critical thoughts will help you to be more objective about any emotions that may try to hitch a ride.

2. Self-kindness: Accept that it is okay to be kind, gentle and understanding with yourself when you’re suffering.

It’s easy to be loving and kind to our friends. It’s time you do the same for yourself. If you mess up on a test, don’t beat yourself up. Think about why you did badly, then plan on studying more next time or find a tutor. People don’t think your project or assignment is the best? So what. You are learning, and making mistakes is part of that process. Take the criticism as tips on how to do better next time. Accept that you aren’t going to be perfect… no one is. Frankly, I don’t know anyone who is “perfect”… and those who think they are fall into the “ego-maniac” category. That’s not where you want to be.

3. Common humanity: Recognize that you are not alone in the self-criticism struggle. We are all struggling. We often think we’re the only ones to make mistakes, feel rejected or fail. Guess what? We all have these experiences; it’s part of being human. We tend not to discuss our struggles, but if you share your experience with others, I bet you’ll find that they have felt the same way at some point. You are not alone. Talking about it may help to negate the power of negative self-talk and criticism.

I know… it’s easier said than done. When you are stuck in a self-criticism rut, try the following mindful self-compassion exercise:

▪ Sit somewhere quiet and pay attention to your breath going in and out of your nose or mouth. Notice how your breath feels as it enters and exits. Stay focused on this for a couple of minutes and then repeat to yourself, “May I be kind to myself, may I know that I am a good person, may I be at peace, may I know that all is well.” Do this for two or more minutes when you feel the negative thoughts creeping in.

This exercise will slow down your thoughts, help train your mind to let go of negative self-talk, and accept that you are okay. For more exercises on gaining mindful self-compassion for yourself, check out the meditations here:

A couple notes for the nay-sayers:

1. Self-compassion is not self-pitying.
Self-pity is being obsessed and immersed in your own problems and forgetting that others struggle, too. Self-compassion is much different. Being self-compassionate is seeing things as they are –while not giving critical self-talk power. Self-compassion focuses on alleviating suffering while self-pity leaves you rolling in self-loathing.

2. Self-criticism is not an effective motivator.
Challenging yourself, recognizing weaknesses and growing from them are productive. However, there’s actually nothing productive or motivating about criticizing yourself. When you criticize yourself you are creating fear of failure and you may wind up losing faith in yourself. Even if you do achieve great things, you’re often miserable because you live in a world of self-loathing and criticism. That doesn’t sound like a very happy world.

I wish you the best. Be kind to yourself!

Hating Your Job Might Be Making You Sick

Having a job you dislike not only sucks, it might also be impacting your health.

Job-related dissatisfaction experienced in your 20s and 30s can lead to overall health issues just 10 or 20 years down the line, according to a new study from the American Sociological Association.

“We found that there is a cumulative effect of job satisfaction on health that appears as early as your 40s,” said lead author Jonathan Dirlam, a doctoral student in sociology at Ohio State University.

Dirlam and his team analyzed data from over 6,000 participants in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, which has been tracking outcomes of participants since 1979.

The researchers examined the participants’ job satisfaction trajectories from age 25 to 39, and then compared that data with the health conditions reported by the same participants after they turned 40.

What they discovered was people who were unhappier in their jobs early in their careers were also the most prone to illness, particularly mental health problems, in their 40s. They were more depressed, had more emotional issues and sleep problems and suffered from excessive worry.

Physical ailments were also more likely, though to a lesser degree. Those with lower job satisfaction tended to report more problems like back pain and frequent colds than those who were happier at work.

“We found that those with lower job satisfaction levels throughout their late 20s and 30s have worse mental health compared to those with high job satisfaction levels,” Dirlam told CBS News.  “Those who initially had high job satisfaction but downwardly decreased over time also had worse health.”

Co-author Hui Zheng, an associate professor of sociology at Ohio State, said the findings reveal the importance that early jobs have on people’s lives and well-being.

“You don’t have to be near the end of your career to see the health impact of job satisfaction, particularly on your mental health,” he said.

Zheng added that though researchers found little difference in other health problems like cancer and diabetes, those issues might be expected later in life among those with lower job satisfaction levels.

“The higher levels of mental health problems for those with low job satisfaction may be a precursor to future physical problems,” he said. “Increased anxiety and depression could lead to cardiovascular or other health problems that won’t show up until they are older.”

The study, presented on Aug. 22 at an annual meeting of the ASA, supports earlier research that suggests a clear correlation between job satisfaction and health.

In a 2003 meta-analysis of 485 studies on the subject, job satisfaction was found to be strongly associated with psychological problems such as burnout, depression and anxiety. A modest link between job happiness and physical illness was also found.

Job satisfaction is “an important factor influencing the health of workers,” the authors of the analysis concluded.

“Organizations should include the development of stress management policies to identify and eradicate work practices that cause most job dissatisfaction as part of any exercise aimed at improving employee health,” the authors advised. “Occupational health clinicians should consider counselling employees diagnosed as having psychological problems to critically evaluate their work— and help them to explore ways of gaining greater satisfaction from this important aspect of their life.”
