Mi Raza Primero!” (My People First!): Nationalism, Identity, and Insurgency in the Chicano Movement in Los Angeles, 1966-1978

Mi Raza Primero!” (My People First!): Nationalism, Identity, and Insurgency in the Chicano Movement in Los Angeles, 1966-1978

Mi Raza Primero! is the first book to examine the Chicano movement’s development in one locale-in this case Los Angeles, home of the largest population of people of Mexican descent outside of Mexico City. Ernesto Chvez focuses on four organizations that constituted the heart of the movement: The Brown Berets, the Chicano Moratorium Committee, La Raza Unida Party, and the Centro de Accin Social Autnomo, commonly known as CASA. Chvez examines and chronicles the ideas and tactics of the insurgency’s leaders and their followers who, while differing in their goals and tactics, nonetheless came together as Chicanos and reformers.Deftly combining personal recollection and interviews of movement participants with an array of archival, newspaper, and secondary sources, Chvez provides an absorbing account of the events that constituted the Los Angeles-based Chicano movement. At the same time he offers insights into the emergence and the fate of the movement elsewhere. He presents a critical analysis of the concept of Chicano nationalism, an idea shared by all leaders of the insurgency, and places it within a larger global and comparative framework. Examining such variables as gender, class, age, and power relationships, this book offers a sophisticated consideration of how ethnic nationalism and identity functioned in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s.

Russia Bolsters Military On Southwestern Flank Amid NATO Buildup

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia has strengthened its southwestern flank as NATO builds up its military presence and Ukraine remains unstable, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Wednesday in remarks the United States called contrary to efforts to lower tensions.

Moscow has deployed more air defense systems in the southwest and has also deployed a “self-sufficient” contingent of troops in Crimea, Shoigu told a meeting at the Defence Ministry broadcast on state television.

“Since 2013 … we have formed four divisions, nine brigades and 22 regiments,” he said. “They include two missile brigades armed with Iskander missile complexes, which has allowed to boost fire power to destroy the potential adversary.”

Shoigu said “terrorist” groups were also active in the North Caucasus.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, said Washington had seen the comments and “if true, we believe that this would appear to run counter to ongoing efforts to stop violence and de-escalate the tensions in eastern Ukraine.”

Kirby said the United States expected Moscow to fulfill its obligations under the Minsk agreement to halt the war in eastern Ukraine and the Vienna document that attempts to provide transparency about military movements in the region.

He noted that the reports indicated the Russian buildup included troops in Crimea, which Moscow seized and later annexed.

“Crimea is and always will remain part of Ukraine. We’re not going to allow … the borders of Europe to be redrawn at the barrel of a gun,” Kirby said, calling for an “immediate end to the Russian occupation there.”

Florida Officials Find More Evidence Of Potential Local Zika Spread

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The Florida health department said on Wednesday it was investigating another two cases of Zika not related to travel to a place where the virus is being transmitted, raising the possibility of local Zika transmission in the continental United States.

The Florida health department said it has identified an additional case of Zika in Miami-Dade County, where it was already investigating a possible case of Zika not related to travel, and another case in Broward County, where it has been investigating a non-travel related case.

“Evidence is mounting to suggest local transmission via mosquitoes is going on in South Florida,” said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said.

“These cases fit similar transmission patterns for mosquito-borne diseases such as Chikungunya that we’ve seen in South Florida in years past.”

To confirm whether Zika is being transmitted locally, epidemiologists must survey households and neighbors within a 150-yard radius around the residence of the person who has Zika, which constitutes the flying range of the mosquitoes that carry the virus.

According to the U.S. Zika response plan, Zika transmission is defined as two or more cases not due to travel or sex with an infected person that occur in a 1-mile diameter over the course of a month. Evidence of the virus in local mosquito populations can also be used to confirm local transmission.

Florida health department officials said investigations into the new cases begins today. The state is urging residents and visitors to participate in requests for urine samples by the department in the areas of investigation. These results will help the department determine the number of people affected.

In addition to the possible cases of non-travel related transmission, Florida on Wednesday reported 328 travel-related cases of Zika. The state is monitoring 53 pregnant women who had Zika infections.

America Needs a Center-Left Coalition to Stop Trump

I am not a Hillary fan or a registered Democrat. I usually vote for the Green Party. But after watching coverage of the Republican National Convention I am convinced that Donald Trump and his legion of chanting supporters are a threat to democratic values in the United States and if he is elected President, to the democratic process itself.

With the selection of Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as her Vice-Presidential running mate, Hillary Clinton has begun implementing an election strategy of moving right toward the political center. Hillary must have been watching Rudy Giuliani’s weird shrieking at the Republican National Convention because her sense of direction is all fouled up. To win the November election and stop Donald Trump, Hillary and the Democrats need to veer to the left.

Hillary and the Democratic Party must build a center-left coalition that will mobilize thousands of Bernie Sanders supporters and millions of his voters. If Hillary and the Democrats go too far to the right they will alienate the young voters who energized the Sander’s campaign. They risk losing their activism and votes to Green Party candidate Jill Stein and that could be disastrous in crucial battleground states like Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, and North Carolina, throwing the election to Trump. Bernie Sanders is in the ideal position to broker a center-left coalition.

The Green Party, America’s left opposition, is certainly closer to the Democrats than they are to Trump. But because of the two-party bias in American politics, the Greens are unlikely to challenge on the national political scene for a long time. The Greens have been closed out of the televised national presidential debates and they definitely need media exposure.

This is my proposal.

In exchange for Democratic Party support for Jill Stein’s participation in the debates, Stein and the Green Party agree to support Hillary’s candidacy in the crucial swing states. In the solid Blue states the Democrats and the Greens would compete for voters, but in the battleground states the Greens would call on their supporters to vote for Hillary in a united front to defeat Trump.

Out of fairness and a commitment to democracy, Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for President, should also be included in the debates. I hope to see all four candidates at Hofstra University for the first presidential debate on September 26. As always, I will be outside the arena with a picket sign.

Dial Up The Frequency Of Love — It’s All Good

2016-07-22-1469207541-594798-11780058_10153129790107149_3221575478209974355_o.jpg

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

It’s Time to Stand Up for Truth and Intelligence

In a time when the American news media focused on reporting facts, rather than entertaining the public, iconic broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite made a comment about American values and education that seems even more powerful today. Averred Cronkite, “”[w]hatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”

Indeed, as “the most trusted man in America” well understood, nothing is more costly to a democratic society than ignorance. We are seeing this on a daily basis today in the U.S. Much of the violence Americans are seeing is a product of ignorance, as is much of the rhetoric accepted by supporters of the GOP.

Donald Trump’s apparent ignorance about topics ranging from economics to international affairs has been well documented, but far more troubling is the ignorance of his followers, who do not appear to have the critical thinking skills or perhaps simply the reliable information necessary to see ignorance, lies, and twisted truths when they encounter them.

The fear mongering that Trump has succeeded in using to gain supporters can be successful only in a society governed not by information and intelligence, but by fear and ignorance. Unfortunately, the GOP’s leadership champions ignorance and distortion of fact.

When candidates make ridiculous claims such as Ben Carson’s publicly expressed view that the Pyramids of Giza were not tombs, but grain silos built by the Biblical son of Jacob to get ready for the famine in Genesis or when Donald Trump comments about Ted Cruz’s father on the basis of a report from the National Enquirer, it’s a symptom of deeper problems. Such comments would not be taken seriously by a public that was well informed and would be immediately refuted by party leadership, unless of course that leadership is itself stunningly ignorant or cynically willing to turn a deaf ear on the dangers of ignorance and lies in order to gain power.

Nor would these types of comments gain any traction if the news media uniformly called them out on the grounds that they lack verity. As it stands, only parts of the news media see their job as upholding truth.

The Washington Post clearly is one media outlet that recognizes its responsibility in the American democratic system. It just published a full-page editorial on the dangers of a Trump presidency. The newspaper notes that Mr. Trump’s ignorance, arrogance, and aggressiveness combined with his “politics of denigration and division” present a clear threat to the American democratic system.

This is correct, but the threat is really much more pernicious. The true danger to American democracy lies in a significant portion of the voting public that lacks the ability or information necessary to recognize what a threat Mr. Trump actually represents. Rather than drawing support, his wanton disregard for facts and open ignorance of the Constitution as noted by the Post should send a shiver through anyone invested in democracy.

Americans are faced with a very serious choice this November. In the past, whether Republican or Democrat, it has seemed clear that presidential candidates have shared a commitment to protecting the Constitution and democratic values, even if their specific ideas about how best to protect those things vary. It is not at all clear that Mr. Trump shares that commitment.

It’s a sad reality that the U.S. has arrived at this point, but we are here and it is time for those who support truth, facts, and intelligence–whether they are conservatives or liberals–to work hard to protect American democracy. The November election is nothing less than a vote on the future of that democratic system.

If we fail, and elect Mr. Trump, we face a very real possibility of paying that hefty price Walter Cronkite warned us to avoid. Whether it is through libraries, schools, or the media, there is nothing more important than ensuring that our society is well informed and able to recognize genuine threats to democracy, particularly when they come in the guise of claims to make America great again.

As a journalist, Mr. Cronkite recognized his most important job was not to entertain but to educate the public. As members of the Fourth Estate, journalists today need to, perhaps more than ever, recognized that their job is to protect democracy by informing the public. The Washington Post took this responsibility very seriously; one would hope that other news outlets follow their lead.

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Alcohol Is Even Deadlier Than You Think, Study Suggests

A new study suggests that alcohol is a direct cause of cancer in several areas of the body.

The study, published Thursday in the scientific journal Addiction, consists of a major review of 10 years’ worth of studies from several organizations, including the World Cancer Research Fund, the American Institute for Cancer Research and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

And its conclusions are dire.

Nearly 6 percent of cancer deaths worldwide can be linked to alcohol, including in people who drink light to moderate amounts of alcohol, the study concludes. “From a public health perspective, alcohol is estimated to have caused approximately half a million deaths from cancer in 2012,” wrote study author Jennie Connor, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The study determined that there is a strong link between alcohol consumption and cancer in specific areas of the body, such as the liver, colon, esophagus and female breast. There are also causal contributions in other areas such as the prostate, pancreas and skin.

How alcohol causes cancer is not deeply understood, according to the study, but it is thought to depend on the “target organ.” For example, cancers of the throat, mouth and liver can be largely attributed to a carcinogenic compound called acetaldehyde. Salivary acetaldehyde levels have been found to reach high levels when drinking.

Breast tissue is another area that seems to be particularly susceptible to alcohol.

Connor noted the United Kingdom’s Million Women Cohort study, which found that women who drank 70 to 140 grams of alcohol per week experienced a 13 percent increase in breast cancer and a 5 percent increase in total cancer compared to those who drank less than 20 grams per week.

Unfortunately, the amount you drink might not matter all that much. While heavy drinkers have a higher risk of liver, colon and laryngeal cancer than light drinkers, all drinkers have the same risk of mouth, esophagus, breast and pharynx cancer.

Connor also acknowledges that some of the studies she reviewed show that those who drink light to moderate of alcohol have a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease than abstainers.

But many epidemiologists agree that research confirms alcohol actually causes cancer, Connor wrote, while the relationship between drinking and heart disease is not as conclusive.

For example, other lifestyle factors beyond alcohol consumption ― such as a person’s healthy behavior and demographic conditions ― typically put abstainers at a higher risk than those who moderately drink. Connor cites a 2005 study that showed 27 out of 30 risk factors for cardiovascular disease were more prevalent in abstainers than moderate drinkers.

“Promotion of health benefits from drinking at moderate levels is seen increasingly as disingenuous or irrelevant in comparison to the increase in risk of a range of cancers,” she wrote in the study.

As a solution to alcohol-attributed cancer, Connor suggests everyone should reduce their alcohol consumption, not just heavy drinkers.

“Population-wide reduction in alcohol consumption will have an important effect on the incidence of [cancer], while targeting the heaviest drinkers alone has limited potential,” she wrote in the study.

However, most people today are hesitant to adapt to the facts. While the majority of the population readily accepts that smoking causes lung cancer, “alcohol’s causal role is perceived to be more complex than tobacco’s,” Connor wrote.

For this reason, simply getting people to stop drinking to prevent cancer ― as many have done in the case of smoking ― is broadly considered unacceptable.

Connor also warns of the backlash that research such as her own may receive from alcohol companies.

“There will be orchestrated attempts to discredit the science and the researchers, and to confuse the public,” she wrote. “The stakes are high for alcohol industries when there is no argument, on current evidence, for a safe level of drinking with respect to cancer.”

Ultimately, alcohol is just one of many factors that can cause cancer, but Connor’s study suggests reducing consumption or even partaking in a “dry period” as steps in the right direction to reduce your risk.

Bill Maher Reveals ’25 More Things You Don’t Know’ About Hillary Clinton

Bill Maher has been imagining what Hillary Clinton’s rivals would say in Us Weekly’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me,” ever since the Democratic nominee answered the magazine’s questions herself in April.

In recent weeks, the “Real Time with Bill Maher” host has poked fun at Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz and Donald TrumpAnd this week, with the Democratic National Convention just days away, it was Clinton’s turn to be spoofed.

“We’ve done a bunch of the other candidates and we thought we’d circle back because this is her big week coming up,” Maher said Friday, before letting loose with such wisecracks as her “secret service codename is ‘Nutcracker” and she is surprised nobody’s noticed “that I’ve switched from pantsuits to space suits.”

Check out the clip above to see what else was included in the list.

Here’s how Maher previously spoofed Sanders:

This is how Maher imagined Ted Cruz would reply:

And here are Donald Trump’s fictional responses:

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. The Psychological Reason Conservatives Band Together Faster Than Liberals

When Donald Trump picked the Mulan-hating, Titanic-loving gubernatorial goober Mike Pence to be his vice-presidential pick, he said that it was about “party unity.” And indeed, as the flopping of the Never Trump movement at the Republican National Convention shows, the GOP has indeed rallied around Trump — why else would Ted Cruz get booed offstage for withholding his endorsement?

It’s a fascinating display of what political psychologists have come to call “shared reality theory.” Similar to how some people need certainty more than others, researchers have found that people are more or less motivated to get their beliefs reconfirmed by the people around them. Sharing reality functions as “a sort of social glue,” University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign psychologist Chadly Stern and Stanford University researcher Robb Willer write in a new column for the Washington Post, “without which we would be unable to communicate, work in teams and achieve shared goals.” When you have a strong sense of shared reality, it helps you to come to think that your “beliefs reflect objective reality” and that they’re shared by your friends and family.

Related: If You Want Less Police Violence, Hire More Female Cops

As you may surmise by the way fans of right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh refer to themselves as “dittoheads,” studies indicate that conservative people have a higher need for “shared reality.” Liberals, on the other hand, tend toward the opposite — rather than wanting to share the same reality with their kin, they’re more motivated to be unique, agreeing with statements like “in group activities, I’m somewhat of a nonconformist,” while conservatives are more likely to agree that it’s important to them to “see the world in a similar way” as others do. And in matters both political (abortion) and nonpolitical (coffee) conservatives are more likely to overestimate how much their beliefs match those of their fellow conservatives, while liberals underestimate how much their beliefs are like other liberals. And guess what: According to Stern’s research, people who report that they think their peers share their beliefs with them are more likely to vote.

Therein lies the difficulty of organizing liberals, which Stern and Willer compare to the “proverbial herding of cats” in their Post column. The liberal impulse to nonconformity may be what drives social progress — but it also makes it harder for the party to unify, the Democratic Party, to be precise. It’s a fascinating irony: Liberals might be theoretically more collectivist, pushing for policy that benefits the public good, but their individualism makes it harder to build a coalition. Just ask your nearest Bernie bro.

Elizabeth Warren Blasts Donald Trump’s ‘2-Bit Dictator’ RNC Speech

Elizabeth Warren just tore into Donald Trump’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention.

The Democratic senator from Massachusetts, who’s no fan of the reality TV star-turned-GOP presidential candidate, didn’t hold back when asked about Trump’s address during “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Thursday night.

“I’ve got to tell you, that speech tonight, he sounded like some two-bit dictator of some country that you couldn’t find on a map,” Warren said. “He sounded like a dictator of a small country rather than a man who is running for the highest office of the strongest democracy on the face of this earth.”

Warren dubbed the 2016 RNC as “the nastiest, most divisive convention that we’ve seen in half a century,” and described Trump as a “dangerous man” who did not have the answers to people’s problems.

Check it out in the clip above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

My Best Friend Is 20 Years Older Than Me, Here’s What I’ve Learned

My best friend is a Filipino with kids as old as me.

It also doesn’t help that she’s female and I’m male.

Now pay attention. I want you to notice what you think about this. I want you to notice what your immediate assumptions are. Do you believe me? Are you not sure? Do you think I must be lying?

Most of the time society assumes the worst.

They think we MUST be in a relationship. We MUST be hiding it from absolutely everybody. But no matter how much dirt my friends or her friends try to dig out, they still come up empty-handed every time.

That’s because there’s nothing happening.

You know what we do? We do things that normal friends would. We sit and talk. We laugh about work. We confide and trust one another. We go out. The chemistry that everyone else sees is so easily mistaken for love, but that’s just because we know each other so well.

I can’t tell you how this happened. The stars aligned and for some reason we had the perfect amount of compatibility. But if you think about it you’ll see why we’re compatible. I’m 23 and I’m very much open to everything. I want to learn from the experience of everyone.

What better way to learn about life than to talk to someone twice my age from another country? And guess what? I’ve learned more than you can ever imagine. It’s the lessons that I’ve learned from this wonderful person that have shaped my decisions for the past year.

She told me one thing, and that was to stay single and enjoy life while I can. She got married when she was 21 and wished she could’ve done things over. I’m currently out in San Francisco, writing in my blog and travelling the United States. I owe it all to her.

The bigger point is that society is too often focused on the wrong things–like age, gender, race, and background. It’s for this reason that our growth as human beings becomes stunted. We only hang out with those our age who want to party and fall in love on a whim. Why not become friends with someone older? Why not learn about the implications of a divorce and marrying early and having children?

There’s a whole wealth of experience that we’re missing out on. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Many of my friends rushed to get married before they got to travel outside of their own state. I know from my experience with my best friend that this might not always be the best plan of action.

I learned so much from her.

I learned that being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like you’re 21. I learned that being a single parent demands a departure from how you acted before a divorce. I learned patience. I learned that there’s a point where friends become family. I learned that Filipino people have the best hospitality.

My decision to commit social suicide by being seen with a woman twice my age in public paid dividends for me that I’ll continue to reap for years to come.

Friendships can be weird, but I’m convinced that it’s the most beautiful thing human beings are capable of creating. Don’t limit yourself because of what people may think. I say, go for it.

6 Things You Need For Your Peeling, Sunburned Face

Sunburn is THE worst.

It hurts to move, breathe and generally exist when your skin feels like lava. It also makes you molt like a caterpillar, but instead of becoming a butterfly, you just become patchy.

So, what do you do when your face is doing that super fun peeling thing and you’d like it to stop?

Put the exfoliator down and sit on your hands. You need to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

We’ve rounded up some of our fave post-sunburn treatments.

1. First Aid Beauty, Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask ($ 9 – $ 24

The most important ingredient in this mask is probably the strangest sounding: oats. A combo of colloidal oatmeal and avena sativa oat bran helps sooth your angry face and turn the redness down a notch. Wear the mask for about 10 minutes and the result is soft skin with a natural glow. Also, the smell? AMAZING.

2. belif, The True Cream Aqua Bomb ($ 22 – 38)

Riding the blue gel waves. : @beautyfindsadventures

A photo posted by @belifusa on

This stuff feels like you splashed your face with water ― it’s that hydrating. The texture is almost gel-like, but the best word for it is: bouncy. We’d recommend using a heavy-handed coat of this before bed. We did (after a really bad sunburn) and it cut down the days/severity of peeling substantially.

3. e.l.f. Daily Hydration Moisturizer ($ 8)

This is a moisturizer that has all the ingredients of a highbrow product with the price point of a drugstore one. It’s got jojoba, aloe, vitamin E, cucumber, shea butter, grape and orange, and the packaging makes it extremely easy to use. Where you’d likely use the True Cream Aqua Bomb before bed, this is great for use during the day. It’s light and layer-able without being oily.

4. Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask ($ 22)

Those with extra sensitive skin: This is your saving grace. Thick like a lotion, this mask feels like you just globbed on moisturizer ― in a good way. It’s fragrance free and paraben free, and (as it says in the above caption) it feels incredible if you put it in the fridge before you use it. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse off, and find skin supple and dewy.

5. Aquaphor Lip Repair ($ 3.99)

Red, pink or sheer? Sometimes Aquaphor is all you need to make a statement.

A photo posted by Aquaphor US (@aquaphorus) on

We wish they sold this lip balm in bulk because we go through it like crazy, especially when our lips are puffy from the sun. You might think this is just like Vaseline, but you’d be wrong. This stuff conditions, protects and provides relief (yay chamomile essence!). Bonus: It’s also great to keep with you when wearing matte lipstick ― it’ll even out your lips where the color has cracked and let you spread the color out again without reapplication.

6. Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen SPF 55 ($ 8.88)

You already know you’re supposed to use sunscreen, but with your current peeling face, the damage has already been done. So … let’s prep for next time! This baby is great for sensitive skin types who are susceptible to sunscreen-inspired breakouts. It’s also a higher SPF, which your face needs after the beating its already taken.

Got your own tip for battling sunburn peel? Tell us in the comments!

Youre the First One I’ve Told': New Faces of HIV in the South

In the second wave of the HIV epidemic, those with the disease are more likely than ever to be female, younger, heterosexual, a racial minority, and rural-living. Vital to the development of user-friendly health care systems is an understanding of the vastly different lives of this second wave of HIV-infected persons. "You’re the First One I’ve Told" offers a view into the lives of men and women infected with HIV. The experiences of twenty-five people living with this disease in rural eastern North Carolina serve as the foundation of this book, which also draws upon unique HIV/AIDS survey data collected by the authors and statistics from the Southeastern United States. This combination of qualitative and quantitative information provides readers with a vivid description of how people live with HIV/AIDS in the midst of their often traumatic lives, and why they manage their illness in ways that seem to contradict mainstream medical and social wisdom. The people interviewed represent a variety of races, genders, professions, family lives, and medical and social service access and utilization. This book is the first to address a history of racism, distrust of formalized medical systems, homophobia, trauma and their interplay with HIV treatment, particularly in the South. It is an indispensable read for students needing to understand health care for the disenfranchised, as well as any provider, policymaker, or researcher involved in HIV service provision.

Russia Loses Appeal Against Olympic Games Athletics Ban

LAUSANNE, Switzerland/MOSCOW (Reuters) – Sport’s highest tribunal said on Thursday it had rejected Russia’s appeal against the exclusion of its track and field athletes from the Olympic Games starting in Rio in 15 days’ time, drawing swift condemnation from Moscow.

The decision increases the possibility that the International Olympic Committee will now ban Russia from all sports in Rio, a grave blow to a nation that prides itself on its status as a sporting superpower.

The Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport said in a statement: “CAS rejects the claims/appeal of the Russian Olympic Committee and 68 Russian athletes.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “I certainly regret such a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport which refers to absolutely all of our athletes.”

Russia had argued the blanket ban was unfair to individual athletes with no record of doping.

“The principle of collective responsibility is hardly acceptable,” Peskov said.

Double Olympic champion pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva described the CAS decision as “the funeral of athletics”.

Russian track and field athletes were banned from international competition in November after an independent commission set up by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) found rampant state-sponsored doping in Russian athletics.

The ban was imposed by the IAAF, the global governing body for athletics, which reconfirmed it last month, saying there were still considerable problems with anti-doping in Russia.

The appeal to CAS was launched by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) and 68 Russian athletes who said they were being punished despite not having failed drugs tests, and that they should be eligible to compete in Rio.

On Monday, another WADA report revealed evidence of systematic and widespread state-sponsored doping by Russian competitors before and at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

This has prompted the IOC to consider banning Russia from Rio altogether.

The IOC is expected to reach a final decision on Sunday and has said it will take the CAS ruling into account.

The IAAF said it was pleased that CAS had supported its ban.

“While we are thankful that our rules and our power to uphold our rules and the anti-doping code have been supported, this is not a day for triumphant statements,” IAAF president Sebastian Coe said.

“I didn’t come into this sport to stop athletes from competing. It is our federation’s instinctive desire to include, not exclude.”

(Writing by Brian Homewood and Mark Trevelyan; editing by Mitch Phillips)

This article has been updated to include more details of the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling and reactions to it.

Stop The Violence And Hate: 5 Things You Can Do Now

    2016-07-20-1469048933-7840592-sNEIGHBORHOODsmall.jpg

I am sure everyone reading this can agree on one thing — the violence and hate needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. I am talking about the daily violence and hatred that is going on around the world. The fire of violence is consuming us, and it seems to be a raging fire. The flames are being fanned every day, on TV, in the news, on social media, on talk radio, at the dinner tables, in the offices down the street.

The violence is committed in the name of justice, in the name of an ideology, in the name of enforcement, for revenge or to right a wrong. I am peaceful man and I will confess it hurts my heart to see such death and hated. We have so much innocent blood being shed for… what?

As novelist and humanitarian Wendall Berry once said, “Violence breeds violence. Acts of violence committed in justice or in affirmation of rights or in defense of peace do not end violence. They prepare and justify its continuation.”

So what can you do to stop it? You are just one person right? What can one person do? I think there are simple things we can all do to help stop it.

    1. Start with you. As the old song said: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” If there is to be peace, then you need to start with you by not supporting, condoning, endorsing violence in any way. I see messages on social media that say, “Well I am glad they got justice — they deserved it!” They are endorsing the murder of another human being for justice. This is not justice, it just murder. So even if you don’t commit violence yourself, don’t be the one who feeds the beast in the form of encouragement. Don’t support this kind of behavior anywhere. Make a daily commitment (not just lip service) to being kind and loving to everyone you meet and interact with. Show others in the world that kindness comes on all colors shapes and sizes. It is not going to be easy — nothing worthwhile ever is — and you are going to have days when you are tired and fail. But the next day, get dust yourself off and try again.

    2. Start with your family. Teach your children to be kind, to be aware of other people feelings, to give back and to take care of others. Teach them empathy and caring and make it one of your family values. The way to change a culture is first and foremost at home first. Teach them to respect all people or all races creeds and colors. As a parent, show them through your actions how to be a kind soul. Don’t allow them to talk bad about others or to express hate. Let them know that is not how kind people act and that it is not acceptable behavior. As Nelson Mandela once said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for loves comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite.”

    3. Start with your neighborhood. Do you know your neighbors? Reach out to them and get to know them. Be bold and knock on their door and say hi. Tell them as neighbors you need to stick together. Have a block party and get to know one another. Let them know you have their back. Take initiative and form a community association. Talk to each other. Have a community of connection and kindness. Our nation is a nation, but it is really made up of one neighborhood, and many neighborhoods make up a town, and many towns make up a state. Many states create a nation. You can’t change a nation but you can change your little pocket of the world, by creating and spreading peace and kindness in your neighborhood.

    4. Start to volunteer. There are lots or people in the world that need care and help. When someone volunteers their time and energy to help someone else — hearts are healed and hatred dissipates. It’s hard to hate when you see people cares about you. I have done volunteer work with children, and I have seen the transformation power of what love can do to heal.

    5. Start to listen. We need to stop being so polarized — no one wants to listen to anyone who doesn’t agree with them. In Washington DC, politicians just don’t listen to anyone on the other side of the aisle. We must start listening to other people with an open mind and trying to understand their world, their perspective. As Tennessee Williams once said, “I think hate is a feeling that can only exist where there is no understanding.”

I am asking you today in reading this to commit to being a bright and shining well of peace, good will and kindness. Let the cool and deep water of that well extinguish the flames of violence and hate.

10 Reasons Life Is Better When You’re Tall

This goes out to anyone who has been asked “how’s the weather up there?” in their lifetime.

It’s not easy sticking out among a crowd and unintentionally commanding attention when you enter a room. In fact, it can be downright uncomfortable at times.

But in reality, tall people really are a head above the rest ― literally and figuratively. There are some major health and lifestyle perks to having a few extra inches than the average person and it’s high time (sorry) tall people celebrate them.

Below are several magnificent reasons you should embrace your height.

    1. Tall people may be smarter.

A 2014 University of Edinburgh study found that taller individuals may be more intelligent. Researchers examined more than 6,000 unrelated subjects and discovered there was a small correlation between height and higher IQs. You genius, you.

    2. Your risk of diabetes is lower (if you’re a woman).

Here’s a reason to celebrate being a vertically inclined lady. A collective analysis of studies published in the journal Obesity Reviews showed that women with a taller stature were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The risk for developing the condition was the same for men, whether they were tall or short.

    3. You might be more successful.

Forget commanding any old room ― you might take charge of the boardroom. Research shows that CEOs are taller on average. Additionally, about half of male Fortune 500 CEOs are at least three inches taller than other males who aren’t in as prominent positions, Bloomberg reported. Boom.

    4. Tall individuals may be paid more at work.

Take this to the bank. Research shows that even just an extra inch of height could be worth approximately $ 800 in more earnings per year, The Atlantic reported. Another analysis published in the Journal of Human Capital found that being in the 75th percentile for height is associated with a 9 to 15 percent salary increase.

    5. You might be less likely to have dementia.

Another University of Edinburgh study found that people who are shorter had a greater risk of dying with dementia than those who were taller. The link between height and dementia risk was also stronger in men than women.

It’s important to note that being short isn’t necessarily an indicator of dementia. It could just be because shorter heights are associated with greater risk factors for the illness, like poor childhood nutrition or genetic influences

    6. You’re at a lower risk for heart disease.

Three cheers for a healthy heart. While your height might put you at risk for some heart troubles, such as atrial fibrillation (AKA an irregular heartbeat), it also could protect you from scarier issues. Research shows taller individuals are less at risk for congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease

    7. Tall people are happier.

Here’s something to smile about: Tall individuals report more positive emotions than shorter ones, according to a 2008 study. Those with a greater stature were also less likely to report feelings of anger and sadness. And the good news here is that happiness is a contagious feeling, so you’re imparting that joy to other people. Bravo.

    8. You might be more productive.

Your height could be an indicator of what you cross off your to-do list. A recent paper published in the National Bureau of Economic Research found over a seven-year study that taller individuals tended to be more productive in their jobs. Researchers made their assessment based on the hourly earnings of each of the subjects over the course of the study.

    9. You’re seen as more confident.

There’s no excuse to not strut your stuff because the world sees you as a powerhouse anyway. Research shows taller individuals appear more confident and had better social skills in adolescence because they were more likely to participate in activities like sports and school clubs.

    10. The weather really is great up here.

Ultimately, being tall rocks. You’re able to reach things on high shelves. You have unobstructed views at crowded concerts. You’re better equipped to play basketball, if that’s your thing. You dominate whatever space you’re in.

So the next time someone asks, “How’s the weather up there?” tell them it’s pretty darn sunny.

Leading The Lemmings : The GOP’s Idiot King Marches On Cleveland

On the eve of their convention, the erstwhile chief counselors of the GOP had, at last, comprehended the horror which is Donald Trump.

There is comedy in this. One imagines the ministers of some obscure Ruritanian monarchy, awakening to discover that their new King is the idiot former Crown Prince, who combines congenital feeble mindedness with preposterous vanity, irrational willfulness, unpredictable outbursts of rage, the attention span of an infant, and a frightening ignorance of statecraft. In short, the not – so – good King Drumpf.

If only Peter Sellers still lived.

Regrettably, this is not a movie set in Moldavia. It is an American presidential campaign, and the idiot King is the Republican nominee. Which is way too serious to serve as farce.

Still, one must grant its farcical aspects – not least in the two weeks prior to his coronation in Cleveland.

A chief source of drollery is what happens when his counselors cannot control him, which is pretty much all the time. The pluperfect example of which is his meanderings in the wake of a political gift from God – James Comey’s root and branch critique of Hillary Clinton’s email practices.

Leaving nothing to chance, his aides gave him a script dedicated to Clinton’s demolition. He read it for a while before, abruptly bored, throwing it away. What followed was that which his handlers most feared – lint plucked from His Donald’s all too woolly mind.

Never good. Even less good when, as often, Trump begins reciting his grievances. He attacked Chuck Todd and savaged CNN. He complained that the media had (accurately) reported his baroque praise of Saddam Hussein for supposedly killing terrorists – which Saddam never did – and then repeated it, cementing Saddam’s place along with Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as the despots Trump admires for being “strong”. But even worse was his irrationally perverse revival of an incident which raised the specter of anti- Semitism.

The controversy began with yet another tweet – this passing on material from a white supremacist website. Small wonder, then, that the site made its point about Clinton’s supposedly reality by imposing a Star of David over a pile of money. Not subtle. So when the media pointed this out, Trump’s tweet patrol covered up the star before deleting the image altogether.

To the normal mind, mere damage control, and high time to move on. Not Trump. He was outraged – at the media for reporting the origins of the tweet and, remarkably, at his campaign for taking it down. For Trump, this was a matter of principle – and his chief principle is that “Trump” is never wrong. And so, bizarrely, he complained that the whole thing amounted to “racial profiling” by the media – directed at Donald Trump.

In itself, this performance was nothing new. His entire primary campaign was one rally after another stuffed with ignorance, insults, lies, boasting, inflated poll numbers, and moronic bits of apocrypha snatched from God knows where. His policy statements were less positions than attitudes – racism, nativism, xenophobia and a certain mindless machismo- supplemented by an alarming obliviousness to known reality, and cemented by constant complaints that the media, his opponents, the GOP and pretty much the entire world was being grossly and inexplicably unfair to Donald Trump.

But somehow the panjandrums of the GOP told themselves this was all okay. It was only the primaries, after all, and the party been selling a milder version of this bilge to the lab rats for years. Surely, sobered by his anointment, Trump would listen to their advice.

And so, for them, his latest burst of mania was a bit like looking up from a belated reading of the DSM, scales falling from their eyes, to discover that their leader was not the unpredictable but canny operator they imagined, but flat – out nuts.

Which, given that he is in the grips of a profound personality disorder, is true enough. Trump’s entire life has been a self – centered exercise in self – branding which blinds him to all else. Thus his campaign has been a hall of mirrors in which he sees nothing but himself. And he brings nothing to the quest – not self-discipline, self – knowledge or any interest in learning.

He has not bothered to build a sufficient staff or fundraising network, or a ground game in key states. His egotism and inattention repel the advisors he needs most, including in a critical area- foreign policy. He shows no appreciation, or even awareness, of the awesome responsibilities imposed on America’s president. In sum, his quest for power is a rolling disaster which but augurs the disasters which would follow should he attain it.

Potentially disastrous, as well, for Senate Republicans batting to maintain their majority. Trump’s gift for repelling Hispanics, women and millennials is potentially lethal – for Republicans in swing states, he is the political equivalent of the Zika virus. And just to make things tougher, Trump has not built a campaign infrastructure which can help struggling senators win down ballot races.

One would think, then, that he would approach this endangered species with at least a trace of faux humility, as behooves a man with an exceptionally impressive 70% disapproval rating.

Not our Donald. In a calamitous meeting with Republican senators, he began by asking a prominent dissenter, Ben Sasse, if he preferred Hillary Clinton. This provoked Jeff Flake to introduce himself as “the other senator from Arizona – the one who didn’t get captured”, adding that, to date, things like Trump’s remarks about Hispanics had kept him from being supportive.

A lesser man might have attempted to mollify a senator concerned about an important voting bloc. Instead, Trump retorted that absent an attitude adjustment he would make sure that Flake lost his seat in November. This menacing threat was reduced to the merely astonishing by the fact that, apparently unknown to Trump, Flake is not up for reelection.

But the Idiot King did not reserve his bile for those present. In a particularly gratuitous attack, His Petulance labeled Mark Kirk of Illinois “dishonest” and “a loser”. This did not go over well: if Kirk, indeed, turns out to be a loser, a principal reason will be Trump himself. Not that the man cares all that much. Asked by a reporter with a retaining a Senate majority meant anything to him, he answered, “Well, I’d like them to do that. But I don’t mind being a free agent, either.”

Having treated senators to a glimpse of a brave new era in congressional relations, Trump breezed on to a meeting with House Republicans. This, mercifully, was more pacific, if not altogether reassuring. Asked for his understanding of the powers of Congress under Article I, King Drumpf assured his minions that, as a “constitutionalist”, “I want to protect Article I, Article II, Article XII” – adding, with a monarch’s grandeur, five nonexistent articles to the current seven.

Afterwards, His Superbity pronounced the meeting a howling success. But just to ensure that his new subjects expressed the appropriate appreciation, Trump gave them a script for the press: “It would be great if you could say we had an unbelievable meeting. ‘Trump loves us. We love Trump.” It’s going to be so good. Okay? You gotta say great things.”

As an expression of Trump’s worldview, if not reality, it was perfect.

Of course, the essence of Trump is a vast internal emptiness, a void of curiosity, a penchant for lying, a lust for attention, an infinitesimal attention span, a stunning deficit of self – awareness and yet, paradoxically, a monomaniacal absorption with self. Combine this with the need to dominate, an indifference to consequence, the complete absence of conscience, and an awe-inspiring lack of empathy for other human beings, and you have a would -be satrap who stiffs small contractors, stints on charity, treats women like serfs, and scams the credulous, whose business career is larded with fraud, bullying and mendacity and whose mode of inspiration is to talk about himself.

This is the man with no soul against whom journalists have warned us- most recently in Jane Mayer’s New Yorker article about Tony Schwartz, the conscience- ridden former journalist who, by ghostwriting The Art Of The Deal, created the myth of Donald Trump. Depicting his internal wasteland – not parsing tactics or handicapping horse races – is political journalism as it should be. Over time such portraits take their toll – as truth often does. And the truth is that a man so dangerous and so damaged should never become president.

Granted, the bar for Trump remains astoundingly low – all too often, the media still treats his stray scripted moments of simulated sanity as revelatory of the statesman within. But as more reporters capture the real man, more voters take notice, including a cadre he desperately needs: the college educated whites who boosted Romney within shouting distance of Obama. For every blue-collar white entranced by his persona, there is a more prosperous Caucasoid Trump repels. Instead of redrawing the electoral map, he may well be sticking the pencil in his own ear.

But this demographic divide also reflects a fault line within the GOP itself. To appeal to blue – collar workers, Trump once again rejected the free- market dogma of the party with an imperious flick of his hand. Not for him the “financial elite”, “powerful corporations” and “Wall Street funders”, who have “rigged the system for their benefit.” Not for him the politicians – and that means you, Paul Ryan – who practice “economic surrender” to the forces of free-trade.

Not for Trump, indeed, is the global economy as we have come to know it.

No, the new King promises a very old deal – a call for protective tariffs which harks back to the 18th century. Like any satrap without sense, Trump proposes to repeal reality, throwing the engines of globalism into reverse. How? Simple – he will magically restore manufacturing jobs which began vanishing years ago by exhuming the protectionism of centuries ago. Let lesser men – or women – propose job retraining for workers dislocated by the new economy. King Donald will simply abolish the new economy.

Never mind that automation has transformed manufacturing: it’s not American products which it disappeared – it’s American jobs. And so Trump’s promises are the economic equivalent of bread and circuses.

Which poses a dilemma for the erstwhile GOP powers that be – free-market politicians and their patrons, the donor class. Their modus operandi was to distract the dislocated by inventing imaginary scapegoats – minorities, moochers and the government itself – while preserving for themselves the enrichments of the marketplace. But their new leader has skewed the playbook, elevating minorities to arch – enemy status while deriding the free market as a scam.

The sans – culottes he has awakened are a restive bunch. Trump’s blandishments may be fantastical, but their suffering is real. And the one thing they know for sure is that the apostles of “limited government” and “economic freedom” don’t give a damn about them. Indeed these privileged grandees, in Trump’s telling, are the very mustache – twirlers who “are moving our jobs, our wealth in our factories to Mexico and oversees.”

Which, for the GOP, is a problem. For what Trump is proposing is to swap the politics of distraction for an outright fraud. When the bread is eaten and the circus disappears, his subjects will still be starving.

So what are party traditionalists to do? Some schemers fantasized about a coup. Others imagined that, in time, their dimwitted leader would revert to looking in the mirror while they replaced his “policies” with their own. One might call this Ryan’s Hope.

Given His Vacancy’s vacancy, this is always possible. But he may well have gelded Ryan and his honor guard, the free marketeers. For one thing, the blue – collar base has routed their program. And Ryan’s own principality, the House of Representatives, is so riven by GOP factionalism that the speaker can’t even pass a budget. One looks at Ryan and, in moments of sympathy, imagines Prince Charles.

His impotence is equally apparent on matters of race and ethnicity. Granted, the GOP has shown little concern with the struggles of minorities. But, several times now, Ryan has felt compelled to rebuke Trump for racist rhetoric like the Muslim ban and his denunciation of a “Mexican” judge.

Trump rolls merrily on, racial animus bubbling in his wake. Compelled at last by the murders in Dallas to issue a limpid statement of sympathy, Trump shortly reverted to type, declaring himself the “law and order candidate” and, with his keen historical and sociological insight, blaming America’s racial divide on Clinton and our first black president. And why not? After all, racism, nativism and xenophobia is what got Trump this far. And so the GOP arrived in Cleveland as the party of bigots and bigotry.

Not to mention fundamentalism. Here, yet again, Trump’s regal inattention to detail had consequences: a platform which sprang straight from the heads of the furious fundamentalists who – rejected again and again by our society writ large – came to Cleveland to stake their claim to the party’s soul.

Left unsupervised by the Trump campaign, the GOP’s cretinous creationists doubled down on denunciations of abortion, gay marriage and gay rights in general. The Bible, we discovered, is not merely a text for Christians but should be taught in public schools. Particularly ironic then, is the party’s large – spirited definition of “religious freedom”: the freedom to refuse service to gays.

One can but admire its principled stand against tolerance and diversity – social or religious – and its firm rejection of those enemies of society: women, minorities and the young. If only in the way one admires a herd of lemmings headed for Lake Erie.

In the meanwhile, tragedy struck again: the slaughter in Nice – in Trump’s world, a marketing opportunity. He responded with his usual gaseous bluster, calling for a congressional “declaration of war” against ISIS while offering no actual solutions to the hydrant – headed problem of transnational terrorism. And so one was grateful for a moment of comic relief – the King’s audition of crown princes or, before she fled in horror, a princess.

The most prominent possibilities regarded this prospect less as a glass slipper than a political cement shoe, rooting them to the bottom of the lake as they expelled their last air bubble. They sought dry land in droves: John Kasich, Rob Portman, Scott Walker, Kelly Ayotte, Nikki Haley, Brian Sandoval, Susanna Martinez and pretty much anyone else with hopes of a better life.

Lesser lights endured the seriocomic, compelled to audition for the king by praising him to gatherings of subjects and, as a reward, to flock to Indianapolis to seek the blessing of his kids. Fresh from his ordeal, the erstwhile establishment choice, Bob Corker, declared that he was otherwise employed. Joni Ernst too declared her fondness for the Senate, though her prior experience as an Iowa farm girl – spent neutering pigs – seemed ideal for any woman forced to work under Donald Trump. The four stragglers who remained were a perfect reflection of the party’s plight – second – tier white guys with nothing to lose.

The two most gifted were, politically, extinct volcanoes: Newt Gingrich and Chris Christie. The third, Jeff Sessions, was qualified only by that which was utterly disqualifying – the actual belief that Trump should be president. And the fourth, Mike Pence – faced with a potentially career – ending loss for reelection as governor of Indiana – seemed to view becoming Trump’s lackey as the political equivalent of the witness protection program.

True to character, Trump treated his quartet of bobbleheads with the whimsy of a monarch and the empathy of a puppeteer. Invoking the tragedy in Nice as a pretext, he kept his prospects dangling by canceling his stated announcement date of 11 AM on Friday, as the rumored selection, Pence, flew to New York in anticipation of a joint press conference, only to be left twisting in the ever – shifting winds of King Donald’s public musings. In this messy interregnum, conflicting rumors issued from inside the campaign; Gingrich and Christie publicly angled for the slot; and Pence faced a legal deadline of noon on Friday to withdraw his candidacy for governor.

As hours passed, decorum dissolved, replaced by a dispiriting glimpse of palace intrigue in the court of an idiot king. Trump took to the airwaves to deny choosing anyone; Gingrich launched a scene – stealing denunciation of Muslims; and Pence silently suffered the stature – shrinking role of puppet in waiting. Angry at the leaks from within naming Pence as his choice, Trump began looking for a way out.

Filled with hope and desperation, both Gingrich and Christie pleaded with the monarch for his favor. Reports buzzed that Trump regarded Pence as a drag on his “brand”, another tired iteration of the also -rans he had kicked around in the primaries. But Pence was the choice of party regulars because he was precisely that – just like they are. And so the professionals surrounding Trump were reduced to begging for Pence’s life as if it were their own.

Then, abruptly, Trump popped his announcement -in a tweet. Bypassing the risky personae of Gingrich and Christie, he at last annointed the humdrum but compliant Pence, a standard – issue evangelical conservative with all the fascination of a tire leak.

Pence’s principal distinction is his stalwart opposition to abortion and gay rights in any form, most recently as champion of Indiana’s anti- gay “religious freedom” statute. But while Pence buys Trump nothing outside the airless antechamber of the right – save, of course, the potential for further alienating young people, women and social moderates -the Sun King can be confident in the infinity of his gratitude. Not to mention his capacity for enduring all the humiliations to come.

Their strained and tepid debut as a ticket augered their relationship. There was zero electricity in the room or chemistry between the candidates, and Trump looked like he had just committed an unnatural act – taking advice.

Introducing Pence, Trump spoke glowingly and at length about… himself. “Back to Mike Pence”, he said at long last, then forgot Pence altogether. After several minutes of this a certain fascination settled in – how often, one wondered, would references to Pence interrupt Trump’s song of self. Rarely, it turned out.

Finally, he summoned Pence, treating America to a middling Republican cheerleader, speaking as though to persuade a crowd of Rotarians that Trump was, contrary to the evidence of their senses, one of them yet also their salvation. His hit parade of provincial pieties – God, country, family, freedom, Reagan, and the diabolical threat of Hillary Clinton – culminated in a church organ recitation of his Majesty’s mythic virtues. With enough huffing and puffing, one thought, Pence might inflate himself sufficiently to resemble the last vice – president from Indiana – Dan Quayle. Nostalgia did not ensue.

As for the coronation in Cleveland it, too, boasts those special touches worthy of a rump regime in Ruritania. One particularly charming feature may turn out to be armed Republicans – a redundant phrase, perhaps – brandishing assault weapons outside the convention hall to dramatize their support for an armed America. Some stalwart delegates, thwarted by the Secret Service in their desire for a convention bristling with handguns, plan on packing heat at satellite events. As one delegate explained, “I think its part of Republican values, American values, to be responsible for our own safety.”

Good luck with that. Under Ohio’s open carry law passed by Republican legislators, other upstanding Americans are also free to carry weapons outside the hall. Less enthusiastic are the Cleveland police, hoping not to be caught in the crossfire.

Should they make it inside, those delegates willing to brave the combat zone unarmed could anticipate a no doubt tasteful exploration of Bill Clinton’s sex life. Further intellectual sustenance is being provided by Rudy Giuliani; practitioners of mixed martial arts; several border patrol agents; The Donald’s third wife; and all four of Trump’s kids.

This Z – list of luminaries is intended to compensate for the absence of the last two Republican presidents; the two prior presidential nominees; the entire Bush family; a brace of Republican senators whose alternate plans include getting reelected; the governor of the host state, John Kasich; and pretty much every GOP officeholder who ran against Trump save for the ever- charming Ted Cruz. The chief difference between purgatory and four nights in the court of King Donald is that the latter may feel like forever.

But day one was merely what this year has taught us to expect. As demonstrators gathered outside the convention hall, Trump blamed the murder of three Baton Rouge police officers on Barack Obama’s “lack of leadership”. And on Monday night we learned from various hectoring speakers that the poisons of terrorism, race and racial violence – fed, in their telling, by a black man and a woman, Obama and Clinton- will vanish if we but license Donald Trump to “make America safe again”.

But that was not all. Not content with victory, Trump’s campaign manager picked a pointless fight with John Kasich. Clumsily if briskly, Trump’s housekarls put down a rebellion on the floor, an unwelcome reminder of discontent in the realm. Then a cadre of brave or emotionally wounded men and women appeared to pillory Clinton – one, the mother of an American who died in Benghazi, to accuse her of lying and worse – while certifying the strength and patriotism of a man who had pretzeled himself to avoid military service.

Good enough for a night’s work, one would think. But though a would – be nominee has never spoken before his actual nomination, Trump could not deny his followers the balm of his presence. And so The Donald appeared from a cloud of blue smoke to introduce his wife- for a brief, crazy moment, the imagination struggled to substitute Mitt and Ann Romney before accepting that the GOP as we knew it was, indeed, smoldering embers in a dumpster fire.

To the surprise of those who have never read from a script, Melania affirmed that Drumpf is every inch the king we never knew him to be- a caring friend to women and minorities, the spirit of American inclusiveness. Even by the standards of conventions this was, to say the least, a bold reinvention

But though Mrs. Trump delivered it well, her text was oddly impersonal, without a trace of emotion or anecdote to attach it to the man she lives with. No accident, it turns out- whoever wrote her speech appeared to have plagiarized whole chunks from the 2008 convention speech delivered by, of all people, Michelle Obama. Thus the evening ended on a bizarre if not disastrous note, evoking the hollow panoply of a craven court, assembled to cloathe its naked Emperor’s ravenous ego in empty praise and cynical falsehoods designed to gull the masses.

And so they have bunkered down in Cleveland, a once great party which now stands for little but racism, fundamentalism and AK-47s, led by a bombastic narcissist with no program but self. Leaving the rest of us with nothing but the hope that, like lemmings, they will save the country by drowning in November.

    He’s Not A White Knight — He’s A Human Being

    Society says:

Men are not allowed to be weak.

Men do not feel as deeply as women.

Men do not have emotional attachments to sex.

    Men are fearless and courageous.

Men are here to save the day, the damsel and the world!

Today I am throwing my hands up in the air and saying e-nough!

With thoughts and stigmas like this, relationships are doomed before they even start.
It’s time we put an end to the emotional imprisonment of men.

Unless we stop seeing our men through a distorted lens, we will always feel disappointed and as if he’s not enough.

Ladies, he’s not a White Knight, he’s a human being. He’s not perfect; he’s flawed. Just as we are.

As much as the big screen likes to repeatedly demonstrate the amazing, enlightened, self-aware man rescuing the damsel at just the perfect moment, it’s a rare occurrence in real life.

For Pete’s sake, Ladies, we have to stop this nonsensical belief once and for all.

Gender Differences – Real or Not Real

There are very few gender lines I allow into my beliefs and the ones I do are mostly hormone or physiologically based. There are many books out there claiming males and females are very different and we must understand one another in order to get along.

I am publicly willing to stand in disagreement with this for many reasons. (But that’s for another blog)

At the core level, the absolute deepest level of our being, we are souls. Souls that are a magnificent balance of masculine and feminine energies. Souls that came here to experience a physical body and the material world. At our very core, we are Spirit in human form.

    All of us.

We may have chosen to experience the form of male or female, but our purpose for being here is the same. We are no different from one another. We are here to learn and grow closer to our Higher Self (God-Self) while existing in human form.

When we understand we are dealing with another soul housed in a male body, we can acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for our partner that has the capacity to heal our fractured relationships.

    Giving What You Are Expecting

I absolutely believe if we lose the White Knight stigma we’ve attached to our men and start looking at them from a new perspective, relationships en masse would dramatically improve!

    2016-07-18-1468874361-2893789-whiteknight.PNG

Although I cannot speak to all relationships as there are too many individual and unique dynamics in play, I believe those of you who were drawn to this article possess the ability to alter the state of your partnerships by viewing your man through a clearer lens.

You can start by asking yourself this question:

Am I giving to my man what I am expecting from him?

If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times. Women expecting to be nurtured, supported, caressed, complimented, made passionate love to (and the list goes on), but they’re unwilling to do those things for their man.

Somewhere along the way they chose to believe it’s the man’s job, not theirs.

By putting such lopsided expectations are on our men, we create an atmosphere of perpetual lack and resentment.

Frankly, you are putting the entire relationship in the hands of your partner and by golly, that’s an incredible burden for anyone to bear!

Ladies, he can show up for you. He can hold your hand. He can love you and respect you, but you have an equally important role in the relationship’s success.

No one person can nurture the relationship alone. Happy, healthy relationships require both parties equally contributing to the healing and becoming of their partner.

    What He’s Not Saying

In my past, I had the belief that the man was supposed to fill the cracks of my broken heart. That my heart was the only fragile one in the room and the right man would know exactly how to make me feel safe and loved.

I was left disappointed every time until one day I looked deeper into the eyes and soul of the person I was putting my expectations on.

I discovered he was just as afraid as I was and his heart equally as fragile.

My entire life changed when I began to view men from a different perspective.

I started to see what the men in my life were not saying rather than what they were saying. I saw their fears and I heard their inaudible cries for love. I didn’t tell them what I saw, I simply began approaching interactions with them differently – with love rather than expectation.

The responses that came were remarkable. Softness replaced hardness. Kindness replaced anger. Gratitude replaced bitterness. Appreciation replaced expectation.

    It was a miracle.

    2016-07-18-1468873875-7792811-whiteknight2.PNG

Your man needs your love, attention, support, understanding and encouragement as much as you need it from him. He has his own store of false beliefs and fears just as you do. He is not exempt from the human experience just because he sports a penis.

Most men won’t display their needs openly as they have been taught not to.

It’s up to us to know that as human beings men experience the same emotions, fears and weaknesses as women do. If we want to experience the wonders of a reciprocally loving relationship, we need to step up and do our part.

And with this beautiful shift in perception, you will become the person he’s always needed in his life – his soft place to fall. You will become his trusted companion, the one who knows and understands him like no other.

    2016-07-18-1468873812-2537940-whiteknight1.PNG

You will be the reason he becomes all that he is meant to be and the reason he will protect his kingdom at all costs.

He will become the White Knight you’ve always dreamed about simply because you love him for all that he is.

Putting Pulses at the Heart of Africa’s Agribusiness Boom

Africa’s food and beverage market has the potential to reach $ 1 trillion by 2030. Exploding urban populations across the African continent are demanding access to varied, processed foods. This is creating a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs in the food industry.

Yet these entrepreneurs have a responsibility to ensure that the new food products that feed Africa’s future mega-cities are both affordable and nutritious. Sub-Saharan Africa is still home to an estimated 217 million undernourished people, according to the FAO. In Swaziland, 25 per cent of children under 5 years are stunted. Research has shown that malnutrition has an adverse effect on the child’s educational development, ultimately affecting the country’s economic growth.

The fight against this malnutrition epidemic is one issue behind 2016 being declared the International Year of Pulses. Members of the pulse family, such as beans, chickpeas and lentils, have tremendous nutritional value. Beans, for example, which are a major staple crop in many African countries, are high in protein, iron, zinc and other minerals.

The most common way to consume beans in Africa is to boil them. In Swaziland, the most widely eaten bean based dishes are bean stew and umgcushu. If new, more exciting ways to eat beans were developed, I believe their consumption could be increased. This would have a domino effect on the health and nutrition levels of our communities. That is why I entered the LovePulses Product Showcase, a global competition to discover the most innovative recipes featuring pulses as their core ingredient. I developed a recipe for Bean Jam – a sweet and smooth spread that is full of key nutrients. Unlike traditional jam, my product has two full cups of beans in one jar, giving a much-needed injection of protein and minerals to those who eat it.

    2016-07-19-1468923073-6290723-IMG_2131.JPG

One of the most exciting prospects of my Bean Jam is that its main ingredient can be sourced locally, as beans are a second most widely grown crop after maize in Swaziland. The vast majority of our 1.2 million strong population relies on farming. By developing food products that use raw ingredients grown in our own region, we are creating a ready market for these farmers, especially in the poorest regions of the country. This has the potential to increase their income, therefore bringing poverty levels in the region down.

Food entrepreneurs are going to need much support, if our potential to catalyse change for our fellow citizens is to be met. Access to finance to invest in equipment, as well as access to electricity and better technology are key areas for investment. In Swaziland, a bean based processing plant for development of a sustainable bean value chain would be greatly beneficial for women, smallholder farmers and the youth. It would contribute to food security, job creation and improved nutritional status of the population.

Young people in particular, have much to gain from a boom in food processing job and market opportunities. Jobs in product development, processing and marketing could be a lucrative way for Africa’s millions of youth to get involved in the food sector, without having to work on the farm. Many young Africans are discouraged from getting into agribusiness, due to the many risks and hard labour. Yet the high levels of unemployment among young people could be brought down if they were inspired to get involved in these off-farm opportunities in the agribusiness sector.

This will require significant investment in training for women and young people in this area, so they may become accomplished in areas such as business development and marketing.

This week, I will take Bean Jam to the Institute of Food Technologists Expo in Chicago, to showcase it to potential investors and retailers. I hope my success can inspire a new generation of food entrepreneurs in Africa.

Watch this space. More recipes are coming!

Who Pays for the Kids?: Gender and the Structures of Constraint (Economics as Social Theory)

Who Pays for the Kids?: Gender and the Structures of Constraint (Economics as Social Theory)

Three paradoxes surround the division of the costs of social reproduction:* Women have entered the paid labour force in growing numbers, but they continue to perform most of the unpaid labour of housework and childcare.* Birth rates have fallen but more and more mothers are supporting children on their own, with little or no assistance from fathers.* The growth of state spending is often blamed on malfunctioning markets, or runaway bureaucracies. But a large percentage of social spending provides substitutes for income transfers that once took place within families.Who Pays for the Kids? explains how this paradoxical situation has arisen. The costs of social reproduction are largely paid by women: men have remained extremely reluctant to pay their share of the costs of raising the next generation. Traditional theories – neo-classical, Marxist and Feminist – can only provide an incomplete account of this, and this book offers an alternative analysis, based on individual choices but within interlocking structures of constraint based on gender, age, sex, nation, race and class.

    Understanding: Wants Vs. Needs

    2016-07-15-1468611389-7532558-shutterstock_449670994.jpg

    Wants vs Needs

How often do we create mountains out of molehills? We should start by defining our needs and our wants. What qualifies as a need? What is a want?

A need is something you have to do. A want is something you would like to do. I often confuse them. There are days when I take my needs for granted and sacrifice them at the expense of my wants.

Let me start with some examples:

    My medications
    My bedtime
    Work projects
    Parenting time with my kids
    Paying my bills
    Weeding my property
    Exercising
    Following my food plan

    … The list goes on.

I used to think all of these were needs. And as you can see by the list, they don’t all seem reasonable to complete in a day. As a result, I would improperly prioritize those items I felt would yield the largest gain or results.

I focused on growing my business, because if my business was successful, everything else would fall into order behind it (or so I thought). But I didn’t realize that neglecting myself and my actual needs was a serious issue. I believed I was too busy to get the rest of the list done.

Since embracing mindful thinking, I have been able to accomplish everything on the list, and more. I realized that the more time I found for myself, the more time I had for everyone else.

Waking up this morning, I immediately centered myself with gratitude, spirituality and mindfulness. This week, I took my medications daily and made sure that my bedtime was consistent. Everything else today is a by-product of those good behaviors and habits. I naturally had time and energy to follow my food plan. (I even found time to walk a few miles while working and ride my exercise bike today.)

After that, I was able to spend time with my kids: watching their shows before and after dinner, reading to them before they went to sleep, and hearing something good from each of them regarding their days.

The one thing I didn’t have time for today was beating myself up or playing the victim. Was I perfect in my quest today? No. My inboxes aren’t empty. Yet. They are smaller than they were yesterday and I found acceptance about not requiring them to be empty each and every day.

The reality is that an empty inbox is a want – not a need. Realizing this allowed me to focus more of my time on my needs and less on my wants. An amazing thing happened…I found the time I needed for my wants because my needs were being taken care of at the exact same time.

Don’t let perfect ruin good! And don’t let good ruin doing something!

I used to let the desire for perfection paralyze me and prevent me from moving forward. The perception that I could not work on my wants until all my needs were perfectly satisfied was crippling; the only thing I ever did perfectly was nothing.

Since then, I have learned that the only ‘right’ way to do something is to get moving. In meditation, gratitude, and spiritual practice something is always better than nothing!

These Mesmerizing Nature Videos Are The Best Break You’ll Take Today

Everybody needs a vacation sometimes. But if you can’t manage to hop a flight between now and the end of your lunch break, then a virtual trip is the next best thing. The below videos are the brainchild of explore.org, a nonprofit that aims to bring people around the world closer to nature. The best part of these clips, however, is that nothing happens in them. Well, nothing that doesn’t happen at nature’s pace, of course.

These long, slow video streams capture sunsets, bears fishing for salmon and puffin birds lounging in real time, with no fast-forwarding and absolutely no hurry. They make for a great way to escape the world from your desk and let your mind relax. Take a look:
